engine bay rust
Hi all, a newbie here...
Take a look at this engine bay picture. I see what appears to me to be rust on the back wall of the engine bay. Is this a cause for concern? What if the rest of the car turns up rust free? Is the rust in the engine bay a deal breaker? Thanks for any advice you can give me. ![]() |

Glue from sound pad that is missing. Don't worry.

What you think is rust may just be the adhesive residue from a missing engine pad - mine looks the same way. You can check this by trying to clean it off with a solvent like lacquer thinner. They sell replacement pads on this site or you can fab one yourself using a variety of materials- there are a lot of threads on this issue, just search 'engine pad' on the 911 tech forum.

Ok thanks guys... so my newbie follow-up questions would be...
1. what function does the engine pad serve? 2. do I need it or do I need to be concerned that this car doesn't have it? I appreciate the help. |

The main purpose of the engine pad is to lower the sound level in the car's interior that is generated by the engine running.
I would replace it at the first engine drop, but not until then. You can only replace it while the engine is out. -Matt

It makes the engine slightly less noisy, but only below 5000 rpm. Let it sing!

With no disrespect intended if you can't answer those questions you should not be considering buying a 911 off eBay. Do a search on PPI's and eBay purchases. Or just tell me to mind my own business.
