Upgrading 1984 911 have questions....
Talking with some fellow Porsche owners it's come to my attention that it is possible to put on a turbo rear sway bar and then a adjustable front sway bar to reduce costs with buying two adjustable sway bars. ( I'm new and could have this all wrong.)
Questions: 1. Has anyone else done this? Results good and bad? 2. What turbo sway bars will fit/work on my 1984? 3. What am I looking at cost wise for turbo sway bar? 4. What am I looking for in the front adjustable sway bar? Any articles on this? Perhaps ( I recall) there was something written in PCA excellence mag? Or any DIY articles of this type of set-up. Thanks for any and all advise. |

What are you looking to do with the car?
Autox or daily driver? How much work can you do yourself, or do plan on having someone do the install? |

Ed,
Did you try the SEARCH feature here in the forums? There is small bluish button tab in the upper right hand corner. A quick search for "sway bar" in the 911 Tech forum will pull up loads of information and comments. check it out.

Car will be for DE track and some autocross. I will be doing almost all the work on it. Have some friends with lots of mechanical skills and I have good skills but little knowledge of Porsche. Only problems are $, time and lack of garage (may be coming soon with new house).
Sway bar search didn't show turbo rear set-up I'm hoping to do. Thanks so far. |

History so far: It's a Euro 1984 911 with a 915 transmission and a 1987 3.2L non euro engine. I bought car in three pieces from previous owner. Friends , DTM group in Long Island and I first weekend (saturday only) we did a general assessment ,parts survey and weight reduction. All interior was stripped clean (including floor insulation), AC components were removed, most heat was removed, lots of extra electric wiring removed, stereo gone etc.etc. Put on front and rear bumpers that were off vehicle and added front valance. Some body work on front hood and fender where trailer had done some damage (previous owner). Added donated seat to drivers side.
Next weekend (sunday only) we hoped to get engine, trans. together and running but a parts mishap occured and that was postponed. We proceed to put on all new rotors, wheel bearings, stainless steel brake lines, new back hard brake lines, new brake fluid and bled. Added fiberglass rear deck lid with whale tail. Added acquired seat belts to both sides. Weekend three (sunday only) new clutch is installed, trans is prepped and then mounted to engine, engine and trans are installed in car, all electric, fliuds etc are done and after failed first attempt one wire connection is changed and car comes to life! It doesn't smoke, sounds good and after test run pulls strong and is declared driveable and then is trailered back to NJ. That is work so far. Now I want to do enough on it to go to one track event this year. I thought Summit Point in Sept. but may forgo that for VIR in Dec. I will keep it stock for now with "minor" changes IE: 5 point belts, harness bar or rollbar, new driver seat, light weight battery placed in smuggers box, new steering wheel with removeable hub etc.etc. I want to gather up all suspension parts first, sway bars, torsion bars, spring plates, turbo tie rods etc etc. and just do one alignment/ride height adjustment. Then new wheels and tires (unless some great deal comes along! Then I guess I start all that WEVO goodness etc.etc. You all know the drill. ![]() I look forward to all of your advise and wisdom. Thanks in advance. Here is first test drive. ![]() Last edited by Ed scuba; 08-18-2006 at 03:52 AM.. |

I did a similar swaybar upgrade to my '73. First I but a bar from an sc [18mm vs. 15mm], then I drilled a hole an inch closer to the bar itself on the arms.I then attached adjustable heims to the bar on the outside and to the spring plates.Viola a stiffer bar that can be adjusted for preload. In front I went with weltmeister . This setup could be duplicated in a later car I would think.
