Zeke - I hear it doesn't snap steer all that badly for a mid-engine car.

Yeah, it might be a good thing if we could spell it right as we spout our expert opinions. LOL

Thanks Milt.

This statement ignores the most fundamental nature of any car -- the position of the engine, and its consequent effects on dynamic behavior.
From a performace standpoint, I won't argue that the Boxster has different and even superior charateristics compared to the Miata and the Z3. What I am trying to say is that they are pretty common and not all that interesting mainly because they are under powered and over sold. One not versed in motorsport might consider any of the three when looking for a "sports car".

The 993 on the other hand, well I don't think I have to say much more.

The 993 is a 911 and air/oil cooled at that, the Boxster is neither. The pros and cons on an objective scale is a whole other matter. Driving them personally would be the only way to determine what one really prefer.

no need. although it's good to see what those cars look like from this view point. I usually only seem them in my rear view mirror.

That Boxster looks great in my opinion.

As much as I like 993s I actually prefer the look of this Studio Torino 987 R Spyder. It is stunning in my opinion. They fixed the two things I didn't like on the 986 version. The front bumper/headlights and the fender vents. The rest of the 986 has always looked great to me.

Wow! That really looks great. I agree, the stock vents on the Boxster are lame. The change in the nose changes the whole look of the car.

I've owned two of each.

Very different cars with different strengths. For pure driving enjoyment, you can'b eat a Boxster. For a car that gives you a thrill when you walk up to it, nothing I've owned can beat a wide body 993.

Wow, a thread naming the boxster that has not degenerated to "girly car" comments (yet). Amazing !

I've had both, a 96 993 sandwiched between 2 boxsters (2001 986 and 2005 987).

The 993 is prettier from the outside, torquier, easier to work on, and did I mention prettier ?
The 993 also has the interior of a 1972, expensive engine issues bound to be out of warranty, crappy ballast resistors for A/C and oil cooler Fans, in stock form it is way too quiet to the point where you can't hear it rev (sorry rick, yours has to be modified), and while quick, it is so linear and quiet it is deceptively so... A bit too GT... But pretty!

The Boxster is modern, has ideal weight distribution and better handling, excellent driving position and adjustability of the controls, turns in like no car I've ever driven, sounds great past 5000 RPM out of the box (sorry Rick, still comparing stock cars here), and has a way more modern interior ! But it is also clautrophobic top up, has less power than the 993 unless you talk about a 987S, they are a dime a dozen on the road, and 911 zealots think it's a girly car ;-)

If I could have both, I would, still... I have to say that when it came time for another car, I got another boxster because a crate 993 motor is $30K while a crate 987 motor is <$10K and I liked the handling more... But F#$% me, the 993 is a gorgeous car to look at when you open your garage door... Not so nice inside, but sexy body for sure...

Do you want/need a warranty ? If you have a 993 itch, you have to scratch it... and a boxster, for all its qualities, will not do that !
