Source for Color Coded Wires and Water Proof Connectors
I have decided to move the fuse box inside the car, under the dashboard, and need to replace/extend some wires. My local auto parts shops carry only single color wires but I would like to keep the stock color coding to avoid confusion. Does anyone know a place, preferably a website, where I can order what I need?
When I upgraded to flat style fuses a couple years ago I used single color wires with plastic identification tags to replace corroded wires. This works ok, but this time I want to retain the stock color coding. If I can´t find a perfect match for the factory colors anything better than the 4 different single colors I can get at my local shops would help. I know that one way of getting a lot of different colored wires is to buy a harness from an old car at a wrecking yard. I have done this before. But after finding corrosion all the way through the wires going to the right headlight I want to use new parts. And I don't want to spend a fortune buying a new factory wire harness which I would have to extend/modify anyway. I am also looking for some high quality water proof connectors for this project. The Deutsch connectors from http://www.deutschconnector.com/ look good and they have nice flange mount receptacles available. The other brand to consider seems to be Weatherpak. Other suggestions?

On new replacement Porsche wiring harnesses, you'll often see that rather than using 'factory' striped wire what was used was the base color wire with a strip painted on. Often very crudely.
When, as often happens, I can't get the wire color combination required, or I need it 'now', I use vinyl model paint: an acrylic for plastics and vinyl made by Vallejo (www.acrylicosvallejo.com). I use the 'Game Color' line, buy from: http://www.fantization.com Cheap, easy to apply and when left to dry for an hour or two - does not scratch off at all and is water and solvent proof. It's easy enough to apply that I stripe the whole wire rather than the ends: you never know when you might have to break into a harness or bundle. Jim

As to the waterproof connectors:
the expense to buy the Packard Weatherpack series terminals, shrouds, towers and crimping tool is totally well worth it. You'll be surprised at the ease of use and the 'everywhere' applications it will take you. Available here: http://www.waytekwire.com/index.htm Weatherpack here: http://order.waytekwire.com/CGI-BIN/LANSAWEB?WEBEVENT+L0B2FB56E0B790900FC3E042+M37+ENG and the next page of that series products Jim

Thanks for the replies
![]() Jim, Using vinyl paint is a great suggestion! I will stop by my local toy store on my way home. I know they sell various types of paint for plastic models. Does anyone have experience with Deutsch connectors?
