82 SC front shift rod bushing replacement

Hey, all. I'm replacing the front shift bushings on my GF's 82 SC. Boy, was that a PITA to get to; the AC controls and the automagic heater controls really get in the way of everything!

Anyway, the bushing that sits in the L-shaped bracket that attaches to the bottom of the gear shift base looks like the wrong part. I believe that I ordered the correct part number, but the ID and the OD are both noticeably smaller than the old part. The new bushing fits into the bracket relatively easily, but does not want to slide over the thicker part of the front shift rod.

Do I heat up the bushing to try to make it fit? Do I try to scare up another new bushing to make sure I've got the right part? (Parts do occasionally get mis-labeled, after all!)

I searched the archives, and mostly found that the bushing in question was tough to put into the bracket--which is the opposite of my experience...

There a Guy name Wayne that has a Book out called 101 Projects for your PORSCHE. All the instructions on replacing the bushing is in the book.

the bushing should not be easy to install into the bracket. gotta be the wrong one.

C'mere, Ruf, and lemme bird-slap you...

Yeah, I have the book and the Bentley manual. They simply say "install the bushing". I was worried that I might have the wrong bushing, and John's comment reinforces that worry.

Gotta get me a new one, I guess.

Picked up the new one at lunch today, put it in when I got home from work. It was, indeed, a tight fit in the bracket.

I had dug the wrong part out of my stash, it seems. Found the right one, though, shortly after installing the new one...

I heated water in the microwave and left the bushing in there for a few minutes. That softened it nicely, and it fit into the bracket with just a little persuasion from a screwdriver.

...Now to finish bolting it all together...

a chance to help out one of the main guys. I just went thru what you endured. I could not get that bushing on to save my soul and checked part number etc (got it from a very reputable internet parts house that has never screwed up an order on me) I tried heating with a hair dryer and and using the most slippery lube I coiuld find---Marvel Oil and it would not go on, so I filed the bushing so that it WOULD fit. WOrks fine---and I hope that the part was not mislabelled cause I hate to think I went thru all that for nothing. I was installing a short shift kit I got from that vendor at the same time. Pelican Parts---highly recommend them. Sales guys know of what they speak. ANd I am not kidding there.
