CV boot replacement
While changing my right rear tire I noticed a cracked CV boot. I won't be able to get to it today, but would like any helpful hints before replacing next week.
Thanks in advance. |

Well, the only 'hint' I can offer is to order 8 CV-joint gaskets, 4 new boots, and 2 tubes of SWEPCO 101 moly grease, so you will have 4 spare gaskets on hand for the next time you decide to pack the CV-joints! In case you haven't had the fun of repacking Lobro's before, the Bentley manuals for any of the air-cooled VW's have several pictures and an explanation of how to disassemble and reassemble them. You need a high quality 8 mm Allen-drive bit, and a torque wrench for the reassembly of the axles to the car. Be SURE the Allen bolts are clean enough before starting disassembly, and hit the drive bit firmly with a copper, brass, or plastic mallet before trying to remove the bolts ... to seat the bit FULLY in the bolt!

Warren it totally correct on this. Trying to use a normal "allen" wrench on this is asking to mess up the fastner.
If you do mess up the inside, get a set of small "vice grip" pliers and grip the fastner on the outside and pray that you can loosten it this way. They can be real tight... use a torque wrench putting them back in and save the next guy a headache. Spend the money and get a bit that goes on a socket wrench and then seat it firmly (read a reasonable tap with a small hammer) and then while pressing on the breaker bar (better than socket wrench to loosen it) slowly loosen the fastner. After they all are loose, then put the bit on a ratchet and pull them all out. Get a bucket of cleaner as you will need it for the CV joint if you are going to clean the unit and be prepared for getting dirty. Its not black magic but just good dirty work that results in a problem free CV joint. ------------------ |
