What is this - O2 sensor light?

I asked this awhile back, but didn't get an answer. It was before I actually had the car in posession. See the picture below...

OK here is pic...

My manual says it is the hole where the O2 sensor service light. Is that correct. The light is not there. Is it one of those things P-owners remove?

Thanks

My 88 has no such thing is that place. I always wondered what that was for because I can feel the space under the covering.

My 81 has the same light and its currently on, however I have no longer have a CAT on my car since I no longer need to comply with emissions testing. My steering wheel hides it from my view so I don't really mind that it is on.

I have a 1985 with 02 sensor. No light.

Looks like maybe a hole for aftermarket alarm light.

That is where the oxygen sensor/'OXS' reminder light goes. I believe on 911SCs only.

If yours is on, it means the mileage counter behind the speedo triggered it, just as is it is supposed to every 30k miles. It will remain on until you reset it.

If yours is missing, its probably b/c someone didnt know how to reset it and 'got rid' of the light. Get a new light assembly from our host for $15, put it in see if it lights up then reset it if need be.

To reset the light -- Pull the speedo and look for a box behind it with two silver cylinders sticking out from the top of it. One of the cylinders has white plastic plunger in the middle. Use a long screwdriver to push it down until it clicks. The light will now be off. It will come on when the key is turned to 'on', but go out once engine starts. It is nothing more than a 'reminder' light to service the oxygen sensor every 30k miles. I dont believe it actually ties into the emissions system.

My 81SC looked just like your 83 when i got it. $15 for a new little light assembly from pelican, hooked it to the 2 wires i found just sitting back there on what was left of the orig light assembly (someone had basically punched it into the behind dash area) and a reset of the counter and it now functions as it should.
