Interpreting VIN and engine codes

I have a 1992 C2 and had a few questions about reading the VIN and engine codes.

The last part of my VIN reads "NS420682". According to Bruce Anderson's book, the "N" stands for the model year, and H=1987. If this is true, doesn't N correspond to 1993?
H 1987
I 1988
J 1989
K 1990
L 1991
M 1992
N 1993 ???

Does that mean my car is a 1993 instead of a 1992?

If it helps, my engine code reads "M6401-62N".

Also, Bruce says the problematic dual mass flywheel was updated beginning with engine number 62 N 01738. If I'm reading my VIN correctly, my engine number is 682 so it does not have the update. Is this correct?

Thanks so much for any help!

If it helps my '88 is a 'J' plate so your 'N' should indeed be a '92.

Can't help with the engine at the moment but if you get nowhere I'll look it up

Roy is right. "J" stands for 1988. "N" is 1992 and "P" is 1993. I'm not sure about the engine number though. The english magazine "911&PorscheWorld" has published numerous articles on the 964s and the dual mass fly wheels. The magazine is at www.chpltd.com

Maybe someone at the magazine can help you with some back issues concerning this matter.

I've just re-read your post - your engine number won't be 682 - that's your chassis number. You need a separate number for the engine. If you've got a service book it'll be in the front of that - mine runs 63J03460 so yours will be 62N*****. You need the digits after the M6401-62 code to compare with the 01738 given in the book

Thanks for the information. I checked my manual and found the location of my engine number. It's 62N 05667, which is after the 62N 01738 stated in Anderson's book, so it looks like I have the updated fly wheel. What a relief!

Thanks again!
