It's been a year...did this ever get finished?
|
Did the 911R sell yet?
|
Ha! We're getting wrapped up with the prototype 964 backdate hard oil lines (making them in SS with attached Kevlar/PTFE hose ends for long life and good weight characteristics) - I'll post some photos soon.
Additionally, the assembly continues - there was a significant setback due to someone (this someone) forgetting to add the old-style jack points to the 964 tub. We had to almost completely disassemble to fab/schutz, causing a significant schedule delay. :( We're back on track now though. :) Pictures coming, as I realize we all come here for the photos, not the articles ;) keith. I'm suffering from "lack of update photo syndrome"...

How much just to modify the 964 tank? |
OK, I'm back. with updates.
In fact, I didn't realize how many photos haven't been posted here  I'll stuff them in as I get them uploaded. I'll start with the backdate oil lines that we're making for this project. Here they are during initial bending: http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/036%20(Small).JPG http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/032%20(Small).JPG In these photos we're following the contours of some factory lines as closely as we can - considering the original lines are a fairly soft material and 30+ years old... We did a preliminary fit on the car, made some cuts and rotations as needed, and ended up with this: http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/964line3q%20(Small).JPG http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/012%20(Small).JPG http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/053%20(Small).JPG We then pulled these lines, made a fixturing jig, and had the 'prototypes' scanned for data collection. New lines are being made from the prototypes for this car. Also, did you happen to notice the jack-receiver tube in this photo? http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/964line3q%20(Small).JPG When's the last time you saw that on a 964? ;) The lines are made from Stainless, and will have crimped hose ends with metric fittings. (They will be black, per Porsche) |
We've also done some tidying up of the wiring harnesses. It turns out that a '72 doesn't need a lot of wiring!?!
Goodbye power mirrors! Goodbye power door locks! Goodbye speed-adjustable motorized wing! Goodbye power seats! Goodbye power sunroof! Goodbye rear wiper! Goodbye alarm system! <strike>Goodbye anti-lock brake system!</strike> <-- retaining this! Goodbye cruise control! Here is some of the stuff that isn't needed in a real car: http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3441%20(Small).JPG and this is what tidying up the harness looks like: http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3442%20(Small).JPG http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3427%20(Small).JPG http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3435%20(Small).JPG http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3434%20(Small).JPG |
Some other interesting tidbits -
Here are the refinished/modified/restored instruments, still wrapped in plastic. http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3446%20(Small).JPG You might notice the early dash core in this photo, allowing the use of the correct early steering column and levers, and all the proper dash switches and stuff. It's this sort of thing that puts the soul back into this 911, IMO. The intent is for the driver to feel early 911. Not the arcane stuff, but the feel of manual steering, large relatively thin wheel, metal stalks and guts on the levers, heavy knobs, incandescent amber instrument lighting, environment stuff... That coupled with a more rigid unibody, tuned coilovers, large & effective brakes, tight-ratio 6 speed gear box, torquey 4 liter... Also, working with specialty manufacturing in our brake and wheel product lines gives us access to some cool stuff, like these motorsport-deigned wheel studs/nut combo: http://eurowerks.us/Zpics/IMG_3431%20(Small).JPG - which should be tasty in combination with RSR Zuchs... |
More, please, more!!!!!!

Very nice. I may just want to ask Keith to make one of these for me to use as a daily driver... Are any years of C2 more suited to this mod than others? How about a C4? Would it be cheaper to just convert one of these to look like a Carrera RS?
|
I don't think "cheaper" is a word that belongs in this thread.. LOL
I bet this build is well over $100K. |

What a great project! Thank you so much for sharing Keith.

Well, it's all relative, isn't it? To do an RSR takes a whole lot more metalwork than an plain RS clone. Therefore, it would probably be cheaper. Make sense? :)
