Did 911s Ever Come In Silver?

I need to know what color I want to paint my 1969 tommorow. I want to paint it silver but can't decide what color of silver I want it to be.

Did Porsche ever have a silver color for 911s? If so what was the name for it?

And a pic of a 911 with original silver paint would be great! Or any other suggestions of a nice silver color!

please help!

Thanks,
Dustin

Go to a shop that sells automotive paint to body shops, they have books with paint chips from different manufacturers. Porsche did offer silver for several (possibly all) model years of the 911.

Dustin-
Silver is the creme de la creme colour for early 911's or 912's. It's the German racing colour.
Interesting history: It came about from the early Mercedes racing teams being a few kilos over the weight limit for a particular race (sorry, none my reference material is at hand to provide exacts), so the racing director ordered the white paint to be removed seeing as it was really the only non functioning part of the race car. Bare alluminium remained (beautiful).Hence the racing silver, and the subsequntly legendary 'silver arrows'.

Paint it silver. Others may disagree. They are wrong.

Well I was looking at this page:
http://gene.wins.uva.nl/~marcol/technical/ColorCodes.html

And they list the color "Zermatt SIlver" for many years of Porsche 924/944/928 and it says the code is L Y7Y. Just out of curiosity I went searching for silver 911s on Traderonline.com and came across this one:

Thats an 86 model and they made zermatt silver that year but I'm not sure if they used it on 911s or not. Because the site I got the paint info from is a 924/44/28 site.

I have to know by tommorow what color of silver I want my car to be so the bodyman can purchase the paint.

So does anyone happen to have a pic of a 911 that they know is Zermatt silver? Has anyone seen one in person? How did it look?

I really need help.

Thanks,
Dustin

Ok after a little surfind I have found a car that's Zermatt silver.

The only thing is it's a 944 and it has 200k+ miles on it's orginal paint so It's kind of hard to get a good basis of what the color looks like. And I still don't know if 911s ever came with Zermatt or not?

But anyways on this page:
http://iginc.alpinedata.net/timmins/ZERM85.5/index.html

That 944 is the orignal Zermatt silver.

Ok I have found the exact silver I want. Now if someone can help me identify the name of it and get me a paint code I'll be all set.

Here is the picture of the SIlver i want:

In terms of pictures (Matt's car look really good in the flesh but the photos didn't come out too well...):

(Hey Matt, time to take some better photos - yes?)

A list of 912 paint codes is available at the 912 registry:
http://www.912registry.org/restore/pcode.htm

The silver code for that year is 6851, I guess. Have you tried books at a good bookstore, if a good one is near you? My 2 cents is that silver is a very attractive colour.

Hey Dustin.

I've just been through this myself. My 911SC was bronze, or brown as my friends pointed out, anyway I wanted silver. I got lots of test colors from Porsche, Alfa, Honda and, forgive me, even Hyundai. but nothing really had the luminous look I wanted. Until I tried just the plain silver with a heavier grain (or partical) to it.

I live in New Zealand but I assume the brand and model names are the same. Out here in the banana repulics we just buy paint and stuff off you guys. The paint is ICI Cobra and colour is just "out of the pot" silver. there are four grades of particals in the silver and mine is the second to heaviest called 980. after the silver get a number of coats of clear over the top.

I've had the painted and have just finished putting it back together and it looks amazing.

Have fun, Bill.

Ok after talking to a few Porsche guys on IRC I have found out that that color on the 993 I posted is called Polar Silver Metallic.

The paint code is L92E.

Now the big question is: I can get a gallon of guards red for $299 will this stuff cost a lot more because it's metallic?

I am really dumb when it comes to paint. Do I just take this paint code to my local paint (dupont) place and tell them to mix me some up? Or do they have to like special order it?

Should it be much higher in price than guards red?

Thanks,
Dustin

Paint places have a computer that has the paint codes for all brands and models, plus the different codes for the changes between years. There is also another color on 993's called Artic Silver. I don't think it costs any more than red.

Dustin,

I just had my 84 911 Coupe repainted a couple of months ago. Originally it was white. Now it's Arctic Silver. It gives the car a more modern looks without sacrificing the classical style. Trust me it looks EXTREMELY good!!! I don't know how to add a picture on this board, but you can see my car at www.carpictures.com

Arctic silver is only one of many silver Porsche colours. It was available for the 993 cars and still is on the 986s and 996s. Polar silver is darker and not as good looking (to my opinion). Polar silver was available for 964s and 993s.

If anyone can teach me how to link a picture to the text please give me a hint.

Thanks JackOlsen.

My 911 looks incredibly good in real. I have been looking at many silver colours and I think arctic silver suits a 911 best. But of course it's not an original colour for an 80ties car or earlier.

Ok I am going to go with the polar Silver Metallic if it doesn't cost to much more but if it's to expensive them I'll go with the Artic Silver. Could someone please give me a paint code for the Artic Silver?

Thanks,
Dustin

I think the arctic silver paint code is 92U. At least it says so on my repair paint container.

Ok i went over to the garage where my 912 is being painted and took a few pics of the car and gave them the paint code.

There are a few rough quality pics of the car at:
http://www.angelfire.com/ky2/ford/porsche/progress.htm

It looks really crappy right now with no doors and no glass or anything.

But I just thought I would post those.

Dustin, I've just been through this process with my '69 911E. It was originally Light Ivory but I decided the colour had to be silver. The correct silver for a '69 911 has the paint code 924. I have some pictures of the car in silver prior to refitting all the interior/exterior trim but they're not very good. If I get a chance I'll post them onto this BBS.

The pictures are not very good I'm afraid - how do you post the actual pictures on this BBS rather than just the URL address?

Andy
