shift pattern on 5 speed from '66 912 and other '66 912 questions.

a buddy just bought a '66 912. It has a 5 speed in it with 1st up and to the left.

Were the 5 speed 901's set up like this or does he have a 915 in it?

He will likely be converting it to a 6 cylinder. What's a running 912 motor worth? I assume it might be valuable to a 356 guy...

How straight forward is the swap? Motor mounts need to be changed. Right?

Thank goodness I spoke to him. The guys at Motor Sheister just got through telling him his car was heavy and he needed a big motor to push it around. They were going to sell him a hopped up 2.7 for 6K + his running motor in trade...

First should be down to the left. I have a 66 converted to six cylinder myself. Keep the transmission just swap engine and I believe just the motor mounts have to be rewelded back.

A couple of things could be going on.

Yes, a 915 could have been installed. That is somewhat unusual
with a SWB 911/912 because it isn’t a “bolt-in.” The sheet metal
between the rear seats interfere with the transmission and must
be modified. The shifter should be different and obvious.

Two other possibilities are it is a 4-speed 901 or your friend is
starting off in 2nd with mis-adjusted linkage to the 901 5-speed.

There are 912 guys that are very passionate about preserving
the 616 engine. The engine should go there.

The best sequence is to get the six ready to be installed (with
all the other parts – oil tank, etc.) and then offer the 616 for
sale while a buyer can inspect it running. This is best for both
parties.

Your friend should buy a 911 instead of chopping up a 912 (just my opinion). There are people out there who like 912s, especially older ones, and the market on them is climbing. Like all of the older cars, there will come a time pretty soon when there won't be many around.
