Sway Bar Question...

Noob question... Did the 1982 911SC come with front/rear sway bars? I think it comes with a rear one only but not sure....

It came with both. Some earlier 911s came without a rear sway bar.

Before 1974 the front sway bar was mounted through the body just behind the gas tank. Then it got moved underneath behind the front wheels, where you can easily see it by looking under the car at that point.

Would you happen to know what size these sway bars are (OEM)? What would be a good replacement upgrade? Actually what is a good way to eliminate the nasty body roll I'm getting when cornering? Should I replace the struts first in doing so?

Well, nasty can be in the eye of the beholder. You can reduce roll with a stiffer sway bar, or with stiffer torsion bars. Sways would probably be a better starting point for a street car. Easier to remove if you don't like the result, too.

Someone will have stock bar dimensions at his fingertips, and whether the 3.2 maybe used a thicker one you could fit to your SC.

I favor an aftermarket adjustable bar, though there is some effort and fabrication involved in doing a proper installation. But you can adjust it. You can do the same thing at the rear. 22mm Weltmeisters would be one option - not as nice a design as others, but less expensive.

I *think* the stock sway bar sizes on am '82 were 20mm front/18mm rear. As Walt mentions, some earlier cars did not have a rear bar (my '76 came with a 16mm front bar and no rear bar), but evidently nearly every 911 sold in the US had front and rear sway bars.

A set of later Carrera sway bars (22mm front/21mm rear) are pretty cheap and a very nice upgrade. Not adjustable, but they seem to be really balanced and work well (that's what I'm using).

If you concider going to Carrera bars, make sure that they come from an 1986 car or later. 84 and 85 Carreras had the same size sways as SC's.

There is more to it than just sway bars when having a nasty leaning in corners.
All shocks/struts have to be good and ALL bushings like new.
Check/replace the bushings first.
