What do you see that I should do
Here is my 69 E 2.0 with 107K on it. I just pulled all the tin in prep for strip and paint and found that someone had made a nice home for the winter.
With the motor down this far, what seals, etc. should I replace? Is there anything you see that is out of order or a concern that I should check into now. New MFI belt is on the way from our host. I'm very tempted to get one of Series900's clear shrouds, but think I should leave the stacks and lines alone for now. Anyone have one with pics? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Lookin good. Most of the oil at the "front" is from the valve breather gasket. Your t-stat up there looks dry, but pull it out and replace that seal. Your oil pressure sender up there looks dry too. I am not sure if you can just by a crush washer for that. My SC has a smaller sender. Your right side chain tensioner oil line looks like it is leaking at the rubber joint. Probably replace that and the other side. At the bottom of the right sided chain t oil line it is leaking at the plate connection. That is just a crush washer. That triangular plate (intermediate shaft cover?) looks like it is leaking. That is just a paper gasket that you can spray with copper gasket spray. I would remove the oil cooler and clean out the nest. The nest is sitting right on top of the oil cooler fins, so you want to hose that down and spray it clean with compressed air. There are 3 seals you should replace when you put the oil cooler back on. With the oil cooler off, when you are looking directly into the crankcase recess, there is a depression towards the bottom and to the left, and another one on the other side of the crankcase. John Walker told me that this can leak and he recommended cleaning it and filling the depressions with JB Weld, but it was too late for me to do, but you could do it. Don't forget to look under the engine later at the oil return tubes for leaks. If you are going to remove all the tin and clean and repaint and remove the heat exchangers, you might consider removing the MFI and green shroud so you can get the black air deflectors our to repaint too. But if you are not removing the HE's, I wouldn't bother with the MFI, etc because you can't get the deflectors out without the HE's out. But wow, overall your early car engine is pretty clean/leak free!

You could isolate the MFI system from the engine oil circuit, using plugs and a good synthetic. I believe Henry does this on some of his motors.

James, thanks for all the good details. Looks like another Pelican order is needed. the nest came out in one piece, like it was solid, so the cooler is nice and clean. I have thought of pulling the exchangers to see if I can find a tick-tick-tick that isn't valves or the muffler...looking for a bad gasket on any of the flanges. I have to see if I can borrow an engine stand though. If not, it's going back in as is. Got a lot done today, few pics below. Henry, as usual, your engines are the best looking, and I'm sure best built out there. No magic wand for me, I'm selling all my good parts to fund this venture. BUT, I'll call in year and dicsuss a 3.0 with MFI. ![]() Jon, you've hit upon one of my "life wish list" things: Learning to surf. Used to fly to SF bimonthly, stayed over weekends a lot, tried to teach myself to surf at Pacific and down in Santa Cruz. Just how sweet can you make that pot? ![]() Todd, thanks for the Broadfoot link, nice work! Janus, careful, I know where you live and you just happen to have a 3.6. I have tools, a Jeep and 3 hours of spare time tomorrow. ![]() Monza, car has been in a tent for about a year now. Jonathan, that was on my list. Henry tells me I'd have to send the pump out for his version of this fix. Not in the budget. Just ordered paint and sending dash and interior out to Jason Cullen for a make-over. Progress today: Jason will turn this pile of junk into a beautiful interior. ![]() Minor surface rust, but again, very glad I caught all of this now versus just doing my planned suspension refresh. ![]() Body is getting there. I may have the hood and decklid in Light Ivory next weekend. If I find an S bumper this week, we'll see what and doors look like in Aga Blue. ![]()

bell crank bushings ??

looks *almost* as good as mine ![]() ![]() 2 things; it's hard to tell from pic #5, but i would check the MFI bell crank bushings. if they're the original nylon (?) ...mine were... get a set in bronze from our host. the trick to installing the outer one is to get a "razor saw" (Exacto, etc.) and cut it in half like a main bearing insert. install 1) inner bushing 2) bell crank 3) outer bushing in halves. it makes no difference which one you cut. they're both the same. this saves the headache of moving the stack. in pic #1 it appears that the upper threadings where the trans bolts to the case have been helicoiled. mine were as well. when i pulled mine apart, the helicoils failed leaving a nice big hole in the mag case. Christian ('A Quiet Boom' here) was making kits to replace helicoils with aluminum inserts. not sure of the status of the project. they may be "in production" (ie; available from our host) or available direct. the ones i got were in 'beta'. i thought i was screwed and a week later the engine was back in the car. looks like a great project. please keep us posted. cheers jerry |

Glad you responded, thanks. This car did spend most of its life in your area, maybe it's evil twin? I'm adding the bushings to the list, thanks for that tip. I've not been out to the car today, spent most of it putting up track lights for my ex-gf, but will look for helicoils. You have a good eye. I just checked the hi-res pics and they aren't definitive either, hope it's just the lighting. You are an early car expert. Any thoughts on this: Strange A-pillar chassis/paint code plate This will be a big blast cabinet week prepping every gloss and semi-gloss black part on the car. Will be posting progress. S

Yep, the oil cooler is quick and easy to pull, and there are 3 seals that aren't hard to get in or out. That should give you more access to the nest.
Tranny shaft seal, clutch fork bushings. Pilot bearing iin flywheel, engine gauge senders, fuel lines, etc. So much easier now. Engine sound pad too.

Shawn, I would take the sheet metal to Applied Plastics in Norwood for the 20% black polyester treatment. It exactly matches the new sheet metal pieces from Porsche, and it stands up to moderate hammer blows.
