What you're doing is absolutely inspiring. Safe to say my next project will be informed heavily by this thread. Thanks so much for taking the time to take and post pictures for us to enjoy and be motivated by!

Speedo,
Where did you buy the hoop for the bar and the rest of that tubing? I have a buddy that offered to build me a cage if I supply the material and I just dont know where to start. Work looks great by the way. Love all the small details with the grommets especially. Thanks Jay

Whoa!! I need to get off my butt and get this thing done!
I looked back to the beginning of this thread and realized that I have been slacking...it is a year since the car showed up. I am sorry that this has taken so long. I am usually good for a car a year. I am behind schedule. This thread is starting to resemble an 8mm family movie from the 1960s. Made a short list (and a long list) of what needs to get done in the next week for the painter, and what needs to get done while at the painter with the benefit of the extra room. I posted a seperate thread looking for 2.0-2.4 S motors for sale...long story, I may end up keeping the 2.7 w/ webers for the time being. If anyone has a complete 2.0-2.4S (or something else interesting) that is rebuildable, let me know. In the interest of getting the car to the painter and back...then reassembled...I'm thinking of posting less and completing more in between posts. I want to show progress, but maybe the detail is too minute. If that is the case...sorry. On the other hand, if the detail is appreciated, let me know.

Speedo, your thread is an inspiration and makes great reading. I vote to keep the updates coming.
I too though can relate to the time spent documenting your work taking away from the actual work! I haven't updated my aussie IROC thread for some time, but nonetheless work has been continuing. So I feel a little hypocritical asking you to keep providing updates... :-) I'm looking forward to seeing the finished car, and enjoying the ride along the way.

Yes, keep the updates coming. The more minutia the better as far as I'm concerned. I love the detail of your work. I'm learning alot.

the only reason its taking what you think is too long is because you keep fabricating from scratch what most would purchase. smuggler door from a road sign, you are and inspiration. i regularly turn a cell phone into pizza.

Lars... think of what you are creating... these things take time... you are proceding at warp speeed here... you fab parts up from scrap metal... you research via pp and pics provided from any and all sources possible... and the result is you are doing superb work here !!
As you know where you started with this tub... look at what you have now... 1 wk away from paint...when paint complete it is hanging parts time... use your 2.7 if you don't have an alternative come that future time of 1+ months from now... I also really appreciate the detail as I am learning a ton here... are you looking for any other fab ~ resto work by chance?? Hang in there !!! Almost there... the end is totally in sight now!! Best of luck and support here!! Bob

I'm paying a shop to work 5 days a week 40 hrs a day, with up to 3 people working on the car at a time...and its taking forever! You're moving at light speed...a job well done! Can't wait to see the result!

Love the detail and how you approach "fixes" This is how we all learn....
Lot of respect for you and sharing at this level. That's what makes this so interesting... ![]() |

Lars,
I too love your thread and posts. This car is inspiring and I like many others cannot wait to see it done. You and "emptyo" need to have a first ride party for the two cars. I have been following both threads (as well as as the thread from Hawaii) - all make me green with envy to be able to do what you guys are doing. I think your car is a work of art, and all home built to boot... Awesome! I can certainly understand you sacrificing posts for work completion though, but please know all your posts are eagerly anticipated and appreciated. I also could not believe it when you said this has been going on a year. Man, where does the time go? Can't wait to see her with paint. Did you ever make your final color decision?

What I don't understand is why you bought my starter motor Lars. It looks like you could have taken some old copper wire, a coffee can and a gear off a kid's bike and made one yourself.
![]() keep up the great work!

Can someone suggest what I can do to see all of Lar's pics on a page - instead of 'small x's'
that appear after the first 15 pics ? Fwiw, I have XP and dialup and see 'most' of the pics...75% of them. But then 'x' appears and no image. More 'Ram' needed ? ...thankyou |

More than dialup needed. You can right click on each of the "X" and select "show picture" this should help

I have just gone through all 20 pages. This is a great thread! I think you have accomplished a lot in the year since you started. Way faster than I could do.
I really like the detail you provide as well. |

yeah right...halfway through the roll bar
I don't have a large lathe which would have reduced the PIA from DEFCON RED to DEFCON YELLOW...still a major PIA. With all due respect to the businesses on the board that offer "bolt-in roll bars"...I could not find one that met all my requirements. Had there been one...I would definitely have purchased it. Main hoop and rear legs tacked in place. The harness crossbar and reinforcing diagonal need to be cut and fitted, then fitted and trimmed, then trimmed and re-trimmed. My drill press was put to the test
![]() so far so good right? ![]() checking the fit on the cross member....it was an almost 90 degree fit, pretty straight forward...only killed two holesaws. When they list holesaws as bi-metal, the bi-metal means they are good for two holes. ![]() ![]() cutting and shaping the two diagonal braces was an exercise in impatience..this is what it is suposed to look like ![]() I had to show my old drill press photographs of "khama sutra" positions to get it ready to even try to cut the tubing ![]() ![]() |

close to being done
This took a lot longer than it was supposed to
![]() ![]() The diagonal looks good after all the effort ![]() Welds cleaned up and final fitted. I will weld the attachment plates to the chassis. They are tapped to have the feet bolted to them...final fit. ![]() ![]() ![]() I am pleased (worn out) the roll bar looks good and will be removeable in case I decide...to remove it. Which begs another question. I had planned on using a 5 pt belt system...with the roll bar...which begs the question; if the rool bar were to be removed, how would the occupant secure himself to the car? |

Seat belts...or lack thereof
The early cars had seat belts that were basically lap belts. The DOT should have required all drivers wearing seat belts to also wear lacrosse helmets if they wanted to keep their teeth. As I have removed the original seats, and will go with repro sport seats, I need to consider how to attach a more modern retracting 3 point harness. In my 71 race car, there are attach points low behind the driver/passenger on the longitudinal and on the B pillar
![]() ![]() My B pillars are missing the tie down for the three point retraction mechanism ![]() Solution...7/16 bolts...bu they need to be turned down to fit the narrow dimensions of the pillar. I bolted the nuts to a seat bolt with washers to help act as a template for ...my drill press lathe ![]() ![]() It gets worse ![]() I plan to use my die grinder spinning opposite of the drill press to reduce the outside lower diameter of the 7/16 nut to 9/16 to fit in the narrow channel in the B pillar ![]() |
