I'm thinking about going the polishing route, but I'm having a little trouble getting motivated.

Wash the wheel - mild soap only, please.

I'd use P21s ONLY - mild soap is open to way too many interpretations.

Vasolene is great - I've tried that and wax both on different wheels. Both are good but the Vasoline will gt down into the pores of the anodization better.

I have to agree here. My anodized lips look so much better after applying the Vaseline and then buffing it off. My wife thought I was nuts (not the first time, mind you!) but she agreed that it made a profound difference.

I used to do this all the time on my 951, which had the black/clear anodized Fuchs. Works great although the petroleum jelly WILL pick up brake dust more quickly. It looks better, but also requires more frequent attention to look good.

Curious, did you remove the wheels to do this?

Also, after you "lubed" them, does brake dust contamination of wheel surfaces become an issue? It seems the "lube" and rubbed down surfaces would be sticky and attract stuff?

Not doubting your efforts, just curious of the after affects...

BTW, I have taken a bottle of astroglide to the car to lube plastic parts that squeek. (It worked.)

To the horror of my wife seeing me taking the astroglide from the cabinet to my car, she said, "that's enough your're not making love with it are you?"

Just curious...does this (vaseline) also work on the anodized window trim? My car is at my mechanic right now, or I would sprint outside post-haste!

"mild soap only"

- actually, you cannot use just any mild soap. Use a cleaner that is pH optimized for the Fuchs - it will be a detergent, not a soap.

Simple Message: Use P21s or plain water, nothing else unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Pledge, vaseline, or car wax - I've tested the latter two but don't see much difference. vaseline does seem to go deeper into the anodizing.

I was using vaseline on the wheels of my '89, but when detailing the car before putting it up for sale I placed a call to Larry at Car Care Specialties to get some advice. His advice was: after cleaning (I used P21S cleaner), use P21S multi-surface finish restorer polish on the rims and then wax the wheels with carnuba (I used Blitz wax). I thought the result looked great and better than the vaseline treatment that I was using before.

Here's a pic below.

Regards,
David.

is there a decent detergent to use in place of the P21S that can be had more locally if in need?

v8_ranch,

I see you are in TN; you could place an order for P21S at www.carcareonline.com tomorrow morning and get ground shipment from NJ to TN in a few days. Our host also carries P21S products.

Regards,
David

P.S. no affiliations, etc.
