The official modified bumpers thread!!!

I searched and did not really see anything like this done yet, so here goes.

OK, looking for pics of modified bumpers. Not looking for bolt on replacements really, but actual stock bumpers that have been modifed some way, including FG addons, etc. I have some of my own ideas that are hopefully going to be started soon on an extra set of front and rear bumper/valences I am getting soon.

So let's see your handiwork people!

You know, if you're looking for weight savings, it's not as much the bumpers themselves that are heavy, it's what bolts the bumpers to the chassis.

I've heard it's possible with liberal cutting of bumper shocks, mounts, etc., all the way to the chassis, that close to twenty or thirty pounds can be eliminated, and a person can still keep the stock bumpers.

However, the bumpers would be fairly much useless at that point.

According to my bathroom scale 16.5 pounds can be removed by simply taking off the 15 MPH bumper pads and rubber trim.

I really want to do the rear bumper pad delete. Just smoothes things together a little better. I haven't seen anyone do anything with the front bumper yet though.

I see. Well, the little rubber bumpers from '74 rear bumpers, are by far the best addition if you have a later car. Problem is, they're rare and pricey, or so it seems. I'd opt to just get rid of the rear rubber altogether. The results are very clean and slick, IMO.

If its equal in weight to the savings of 16.5 pounds in the rear, you could get a front bumper blade - I think they save 15 pounds or so. Over 30 lbs savings right there.

I don't have any pics here at work, but it's fairly common on the early long hood cars to remove the big rubber bumperettes and trim. I think it makes the front end look much sleeker.

The trim by itself is not too bad, but I think on the US cars with the bumperettes, the trim does not go all the way across. I've had a fiberglass front on my race car for so long I don't remember the stock bumper.

I'm interested in seeing what some others have done as I want to add some additional aero on mine to try and plant the nose of the car better. I'm already planning to add an aluminum splitter to the bottom.

Those are great links Rich! I would like to mainly get pics together in one thread for people that want to see different treatments. I am working on something a bit different (I think) for the front, and wanted to see if anyone else had tried it yet - without totally giving it away at this point.

I wonder what that bumper would do in an impact...? You get to a point where you might as well just go to fiberglass for protection vs. the swiss cheese version of the original.

As has been mentioned - the bumpers are not that heavy themselves it is the mounting trim and mounting hardware points. Removing all that an adding euro crush tubes to are right in the fiberglass realm give or take with much for crash worthiness for your extra lbs.

I remember one member, not to long ago posted pics of stock bumpers modifed and it looked great. His car was silver and removed all the rubber, bumperettes, and filled all the holes, and it looked great. Heavy(compared to fiberglass) I'm sure, but looked great.

All the bolts are easy to hide - simply make a carriage bolt rail that provides adjustment from the back and bolt to the mounting shocks. (Carriage will ensure they don't turn when tightening - and use grade 8)

You covered up all those holes and filled the front and didn't hide the bolts Cmon.....

Hmm... the stock bumpers are not exactly made of tin foil. They are heavy. Go and see/feel the thickness and you'll understand why I'm not worried about the reduced crash protection. Even with all the holes there's plenty of aluminum left.

You save more than enough weight to justify spending an hour with the hole saws

I prefer the look of the stock bumpers and fortunately stock looking bumpers are available in fiber glass. I purchased a used pair a couple months ago. As you an see the "rubber" parts are painted semi gloss black to retain the stock look.

I am making a pad that will cover just the holes and hold down the end of the black rubber trim. You would not have to drill any new holes and you could return the car to original with out any problems. The picture is my rear bumper as it is now.
