In regards to the Subaru / Porsche & VW tech help:
I had thought about that while reading this thread. Would make sense why bolts and such line-up so easily. Conspiracy theory: VW/Porsche were going to do a stock buyout deal with Subaru thereby the tech exchange. Almost all Japanese car manufacturers have or have had some type of cross ownership with foreign manufacturers. Toyota is the only one that comes to mind that hasn't done this but they have done so with another Japanese car manufacturer which ended up being a buyout by Toyota recently.

Nice Porscheru. Your fabrication skills are amazing.
I'd think if people were going to do this more often, the WRX or STi engines would be more suitable although I don't know how much the motor weighs. My WRX mades a reliable 213/238 AT THE WHEELS (peak torque at 3250rpms) through the AWD system, so probably around 260-270 at the crank on 91 octane after a professional tune. On the 94 octane I'm running now, I've got 5 more degrees of advance, so probably a nice HP bump. An STi with the same basic block makes 300/300 at the crank with TONS of reliable potential. Yeah, it's an abomination but if it's a track toy....... |

I have been doing a bunch of work on this lately (especially today) but it's all just final detail stuff so I don't think the pictures would be very interesting. I got the battery wired into the chassis and finally mounted. I mounted a supplemental fuse block in the engine compartment to supply the needed fused links for the engine management. I also finished the wiring for the ECM in the chassis (sounds like no big deal but it was a lot of work). I am now able to turn the key on and the ECM powers up just like it's supposed to. In theory, all I have to do is put the engine back in, plug everything in, and it should start up. I'm just waiting for North Hollywood Speedometer to send me my oil temp/pressure gauge back so I can fit the sending unit into the water x-over pipe and put the intake manifold back on. I mounted the coolant overflow bottle in the engine bay (it's starting to get crowded in there) and the ignitor for the coil packs. I also replaced the old rubber brake lines with new stainless braided lines. I also looked at working out a throttle cable and I think it's going to be pretty easy. I will do something similar to the stock "rod" only I will probably just used a shortened SVX cable.

great work!, some tips
I love it, as a builder of a SVX EG33 powered Vanagon Doublecab pickup I can really appreciate your work! I also love my Porsche flat 6 in my 914-6 also but I can understand the motivation for the swap very well.
Somethings to watch for The Coil over plugs units can be a little flaky. They can also partially fail in some cases. If you have a miss or even a miss when only cold have a spare unit on hand to troubleshoot with! I have had one failure. Other SVX owners always check this 1st. On the OBD 1 version if you have a stumble when pulling away there is the famous "crush mod" for the ECU. Apparantly from a factory TSB. Search http://www.subaru-svx.net for more details, worked for me! Most SVX guys set their TPS at .5 volts with throttle closed. better response. If you ground the AC wire to the ECU it will raise the throttle 100 rpm. 600 rpm is sometimes too low. If it works out better you can swap the vacuum line fitting for the power brake booster to the other side, its already tapped. I am running the ecutune stage 1 kit. seemed to help them motor between shifts. The stock ECU is for a automatic of course. Check the iris valve operation before install. much easier than after! If the Subaru ECU wont drive your tach signal Baker Electronics makes a gizmo that will convert the output for you. $50 and works great. Good luck, I will be watching your progress! John Daron |

Freakin' amazing. I love the feeling you get the first time the engine fires! The exhaust note is AMAZING! I still have a few things to do before I call it a complete success, but I am thrilled! I will try and get some video this weekend so you guys can hear this thing. Things left to do before driving... Finish connecting PCV system Double check for cooling system leaks Bleed air from cooling system Make throttle cable Install rear sway bar Install axles and finish anything else I'm missing. |

You gotta love it when you get it right the 1st time, awesome! The exhaust note is great when it does not have to pass through the factory 3 cats, resonator and muffler! To me it sounds kinda italian!

that's the air box. The MAF sensor bolts to it, and there is a K&N inside. It draws air through the hole left by the oil tank. I guess you could call it a "cold-air-intake"
