My paintscratch.com showed up but...

Got my paintscratch stuff in this week. It ordered 1 set of cans and a set of paint pens in 1983 Rubinrot (Ruby Red) metallic. The paint in my paint pen is a little too light in color. I thought maybe the clear coat would help darken it up, and it did, but not enough. I decided to try the can to see, and it seems to be a better match. paintscratch says they have a 100% match guarantee. Anyone ever take them up on it. Is there anything I can do with the stuff in the pen?

Thanks.

[in the voice of Napolean Dynamite] "Dang... 143 reads and no posts yet. Is that because you think I'm fat?"

OK, eriously, noone has had this problem, or is everyone on vacation...

Now now take it easy. I have bought a lot of paint from paintscratch in the past.

I would ring them up and explain the problem. We have always found them to be pretty understanding. They have even made up small batches of special order paint for us.

I believe that they will stand behind their product.

Is the paint on the car like new? Maybe sending the product back and getting it a little darker.

Good Luck

And as far as being fat, well I guess I fall into that catergory too

OBTW how do I join the "PLOT"?

LOL! Oh! I am not saying anything negative towards paintscratch at all. I was just curious as to the past experiences of others when the first attempt didn't quite match. I am realistic in understanding that the original paint is now 24 years old, and I am here, and paintscratch is "there" - trying to perfectly match may be impossible. I was going to call them later today. Again, I was just curious about past experiences.

Thanks!

I used paintscratch once. They mixed the incorrect color, but quickly remixed and corrected the problem.

I think the problem you might have is a little different, the color they mixed may very well be correct, but the paint on your car must have faded by now!! I'm sure they could mix a slightly lighter shade, but I'm not sure if they would do this for free. I would give them a call, and you never know, maybe they will surprise you with a lighter shade free of charge.

I just re-read your post, you say the paint is already too light!!!! I should read more carefully.

If your car has original paint, then really the paint from the pen should be the same or darker, definatley not lighter!!!

Good luck, I'm sure they will fix the problem.

i orders a few cans of paint to try and pick a color for painting my whole car. the messien blue was darker than it should be and dryed flat, not glossy. there are 2 color codes for slate grey so i ordered them both, one was the dark slate grey and the other was silver. these might be problems with paint code information but i was not impressed with paintscratch. i did not bother to try and concact them however.

I got some paint for my blue Bimmer. It was more of a Purple on the car. They swapped it, no issues.

Ordered light yellow from them and received pea green. They replaced it but wanted me to send the incorrect bottle back first. The second bottle was a perfect match.

Update on my sitch...

Got the new batch of paint in today. Not bad, only took them about 10 days after talking to them and sending the sample of the bad color back.

The new paint seems to be spot on. It really is kind of weird in a way... I had a lot of people reply to say the second attempt was good. Not sure why that happens, or how often for that matter - I am sure we are a mere fraction of their customer base!

Anyway, very happy with the new batch! I will post pictures later on... that is if I can find a spot I have not touched up yet. The front part of my hood was starting to get really chipped up. After I got going, it was hard to stop, but I want to try to take a before shot. I still need to apply the clear, followed by wetsand and buff. I also need to respray my headlight trim rings.

Question for the paint experts. I think I know the answer but would like a confirmation before I get carried away (grandpa is no longer watching over my shoulder!). I planned to wetsand the areas of touch up with 1000. Then rubbing compound and polish, etc... I have a lot of touch up on the front of the hood. I am a little sheepish about wetsanding the whole area, or even the whole hood. I think it is OK to do this, but please tell me if I am right or wrong, or should do somsthing different. I would hate to go from OK to a lot worse...

One note from my experience is this: I will not do the paint pens again! I do not working with them, and the worst part is that they tend to drop paint every once in a while when you least expect it. Very frustrating and potentially irreversible if in the wrong spot! I will stick with the little "brush-in-a-bottle" for future jobs. It could very well be my technique used that caused the problem, but I cannot see any other way to use them, except like I did.

Thanks...

Has your car been repainted? I have an 86 guards red car that is single stage paint.
I didn't think an 83 would have 2 stage.

Not repainted... Mine is Ruby Red, or Rubinrot Metallic. I think all of the metallics were clear-coated. Am I right, anyone?

yes, your metallic car would be clear coated. All metallic paint porsches have been clearcoated, since way back (like the late 60s/early 70s).

as far as wet sanding.....it depends on how big of a 'glop' of paint you've dabbed into the chips that needs sanding down. i typically use 1500 grit wet sandpaper instead of the 1000....and i use it on a small flat block to just hit glop and not hit the surrounding paint too much. if you use something less aggressive like the 1500, then that makes knocking the shine back into it much easier.....it also means you run less of a chance of breaking through the clear coat, which is a BIG no-no!

let me know when you are going to do your work and i'll come by and help.

i'm trying to find one of those 2000 grit blocks that looks like an eraser we used in grade school.....the paintless dent guy had one of those and it 'erased away' scratches....i thought it would be perfect for sanding down touch-up paint glops. he said that he gets them at the paint supply shop.

Bluesky,

Where are you located? I am in Jackson. I am usually not one to turn down good help! Especially if you have done much of this before...

We have a decent autobody supply place north of us in Humboldt. I will go by and see if they have some of the "erasers" you spoke of.

Send me an email and I will contact you when we get back from vacation at the end of the month.

Thanks
