Intake, improve the breathing with filter/cover mods and exhaust (free breathing exhaust)! Simple and provide improved performance.

Don't know what kind of emissions tests you have to pass but if you can make changes to your exhaust system then one of the best improvements you can make is switching to SSIs.
SSIs are stainless steel headers that include heater boxes. The design mimics the pre 74 exhaust, I believe, and creates a much better flow for the engine. They add about 10-12hp and the engine sounds a little better as well. If you add a sport muffler you'll have a very nice street system that will last a long time. Look around but this was my favorite improvement when I had a 3.0. |

Welcome, (edit: oops, I see you did get some responses - took me too long to type)
Have you posted a pic yet of your car? Not sure how many responses you will get to your question. I have an 83 with 3.0 and CIS. I am certainly no expert like some on this board, but I can tell you a few things from my observations and minimal experiences thus far! I think most on this board would probably tell you to leave the car alone as far as any hard core mods to engine. The 3.0 is basically a great little engine that runs well if properly maintained. I would start with doing a basic baseline of the thing (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, valve adjustment, all fluids, etc., etc...). When I got my car almost a year ago now, it ran pretty good I thought. Then I was having a little miss on acceleration, but was thinking it might be CIS related. Well, then I took the time to look at my ignition system and checked the wires at night. It was like a laser show at a planetarium. I changed my wires and it was a night and day difference in how the car ran. I only had 3 of the 6 wires that actually tested good. One was completely open ckt. But, since you will have your engine out anyway, this is what I would do based on what I have read here. The car you have, if not a euro spec SC, will benefit the most from a set of SSI's and perhaps a cat bypass or Porsche euro premuffler, and maybe a new muffler as well. From what I have learned so far on this list, that is about the best you can do. So chunk out the $1000-1200 for the SSI's and the necessary oil lines you have to replace with that mod. The next best thing is to find a set of early HX's (you'll have to ask someone else on dates). This is supposed to accomplish similar results as the SSI', but more work involved I guess as far as the flanges are concerned - again, someone else will have to clarify this for you. As far as cams are concerned, I think you CAN swap cams with the 964 cams, but I may have that one backwards as far as which one benefits which. Good luck!

You'll need to have your cams reground to a 964 profile. A real 964 cam has a gear on it to run something else, it can be machined off, but sounds easier to have your's reground. A 964 grind works fine with CIS, it's supposed to pull strong to 6500. With the stock cam HP dies off after 5500.

Sure, I've removed 78 pounds from my SC over the last 18 months. The easiest and cheapest place to remove weight is from the driver's seat.

easiest is probably to see if a dizzy re-curve can make it a little more snappy.

When I rebuilt I added 964 grind cams, SSIs, and 9.5:1 pistons. I am not sure what added what but, it definantly runs stronger. Having said that and being a beginner at the track, I know that the car is much faster than I am. As Nostatic said, track time is the only way to make that better.

Without going into the engine, SSI's are the best upgrade. The intake is about as effecient as you are going to get stock, as long as you keep the CIS setup. If you decide to change to carbs, you will have a lot more options on internal changes that can make bigger gains in horsepower.

Pete-stevers:
Get Wayne's book on engine rebuild; I used it to build my SS 3.2. Lot's of info on the subject of modifying a 3.0. Do a search! Discussed many times, do a search! Anywhere from $1000 to $10,000. Do a search! The search-button is on the upper right! Have fun.
