Hello American Porsche Fans,
I want to set the ignition timing on my 1972 Porsche 911 2.4S does anyone know please how to do that ? They are to marks on the crankshaft pulley ? There is no marks on the case ? How much advance please recommanded my Porsche Factory. I changed the points for a ignitor but it didn't work. Then back to stock point and the RPM sensor is not working anymore and I have new points so I need to adjust the timing again. Thanks for your help. Regards Jérôme |

Idle timing is set to 5 degrees ATDC with the vacuum hose connected. The two marks near TDC are at TDC and 5 dgrees after TDC. The TDC mark is labled Z1. There is no mark on the crankcase, you use the seam of the case as a reference.

Jérôme,
Here are the settings. I hope this helps: Breaker Point Gap: .035mm (.014 inch) Dwell Angle: 38º +/- 3º @ 900 RPM Vacuum hose connected (38º or greater @ 6,000 RPM w/ vacuum hose off) Timing: 5º above top dead center @ 900 RPM (Vacuum hose connected) 31-38º below top dead center @6,000 RPM (Vacuum line off and plugged) To find Top Dead Center for cylinder #1: Rotate the engine to the point where the Z1 mark on the crankshaft engine pulley lines up with the split in the case and the valves for cylinder #1 are completely closed. * I know you said there are no marks on the pulley but look closely, it's a small notch that you can feel with a fingernail and see if you look closely. Once you find it, put a small dab of white paint on it for future reference. The tip of the rotor should be pointing to the small notch in the distributor housing. TDC for the next cylinder is a 120º clockwise turn of the engine.

Jerome,
Here is a thread with all of the info you need: distributor lube... Be sure to check your distributor's advance curve at 1000 rpm, 1500 rpm, 2000 rpm, 4000 rpm, and 6000 rpm. If any sticking or slow response to changes are noted, then I suggest removing the distributor at TDC #1 cyl, and do a partial disassembly and cleaning of the centrifugal advance mechanism. By your reference to rpm sensor, do you mean the MFI Speed Relay, or RPM Transducer used to provide signal to the microswitch that operates the cutoff solenoid on the MFI pump?
