I've been using Amsoil 20w-50 Z-rod which is full synthetic and plenty of Zn and Ph. I may go with Mobil 1 V-twin as it is so easy to get and just as good.
I use it in my 73S and 85 Carrera. Also, in my 64 Beetle.
I have a friend who uses 5 qts Mobil 1 15w-50 with 5 qts V-twin in his 72T.

Yes, it would be just fine.

An esteem member here recently tore his engine apart and we were amazed how all the bearings looked, brand spanking new.

Well I used up the Kendal GT1 20w50 I had and nobody around seems to carry it any more, plus I have no idea if the formulation is the same as when I bought a few cases 4 years ago.

Any readily available oils that are still good for a 82 engine?

Wal-Mart still carries Rotella and Mobil 1, those still acceptable?

Just switched over to the Delo 400 LE - 15 W40 Walmart for CHEAAAAP. According to some people that know around here - it's a good option. For me, it feels like it revs slightly more easily, and cranks faster. But maybe that's my imagination. One of the professional engine builders on here uses it and reported better results on the dyno as well. *shrug* but who knows?

My new mechanic uses Kendall GT-1 so that's what I'm using these days. My car runs the same as it did with Swepco 20W50.

I'm not sure why I'm updating you all on this but I feel obligated.

Delo 400 LE - 15 W40 is a good oil for our engines, the lower VI leads to less pumping loss, ie higher usable torque
P is 1200PPM
Zn is 1300PPM
both right where you want them to be

If you're asking about Rotella T6 5W-40 the formula is supposed to be changing or has already changed. The Zn and P will be reduced.

You can order it from Amazon (or maybe you don't consider shipped to your doorstep as "readily available"?!?! ).

As far as the formulation goes, I bet you could shoot the manufacturer an email and they would tell you.

The lesson here is what I’ve always felt intuitively.

Those “house brands” are typically junk.
Who actually buys “Summit Racing” oil? Or "Edlebrock" oil?
It’s like those vanity wine bottles “Sugarwood's Vineyard” and filled with $2 plonk.

It was also interesting to see boutique brands like Brand Penn and Royal Purple are at the bottom of the list.

I have actually read the whole thing.

Here is what is going on, it's a moving target. Motor oil is constantly being re-formulated, so new information comes out.

This thread started ten years ago, and it's a credit to those on this forum who keep it up to date.

Do what you wish. I have been using Brad-Penn since this thread started. I had to get my top end rebuilt last year, every thing except the damaged parts was in excellent condition. Was it the oil? Who knows but why change to find out the oil was the correct choice.

Good link and interesting info. I've been using Mobil 1 for about 30 years. Mainly because my dad retired from Mobil. Good to see my emotional decision hasn't been a bad one.

I always had a feeling Royal Purple was all hype and marketing. Plus I put their Syncromesh in my T56 and it ruined 3rd gear syncro in less than 200 miles. Their formula softens the glue on the carbon discs and the disc pulls right off. I obviously found this out too late. Trans shop knew all about it.

I followed the link and read a few articles. This one was interesting and about the new base stock that no major manufacture will used but them, ect... Bulletin - High Temperature High Shear (HTHS) / LN Engineering - Knowledge Base LN Engineering

I googled the mPAO base stock and what do I find. The base stock is made by Exxon Mobil Chemical and Chevron Phillips. I assume they buy it and make their Driven brand oil from Mobil or Chevron base stock. SpectraSyn Elite™ mPAO

Broke down and purchased Porsche Classic oil since it has the correct level of ZDDP for the 3.0.
