Getting ready to move to Newport, RI

I'm nearing the end of my time in Monterey and I'll be moving the family to Newport starting on the 12th or 13th of November. I'll be driving the 911 and my wife will be driving her Grand Cherokee. We'll be taking the southern route.

My car is almost ready.

I've done a complete tune-up of the car this week:
Valve alignment, oil/filter change, new Cap and rotor, Clewitt Ignition wires, and new plugs.

In the past six months:
Re-built brake system, Re-built suspension, new shocks, new trans and engine mounts, installed a half-cage and custom sub-frame, lowered to Euro ride height, bump steer kit washers, alignment, corner balanced, new tires, many new gaskets and replaced transmission fluid.

Not to mention the numerous wiring headaches I've had...


I'd like to get "Wong'ed" before the trip. The only problem that I have is that my engine number was removed by a PO or mechanic. It seems to be an '84 but I don't know if its a Euro or US engine. So I started this thread: Question for Carrera Engine Experts

With no firm feeling that I know for sure what engine this is I opened up the Motronic brain back in June and took a few bad pictures of the box and the chip I'd like to replace with one of Steve's:









I had written down all of the information on the chip back in June when I took the pictures, but I can't seem to locate that sheet of paper. I'll look for it again tomorrow, but I was hoping a Motronic guru would be able to tell if the engine is US or Euro by the numbers on the Motronic's case.

Well I'm crossing my fingers.

Wow, too funny. Are you Navy? My dad was a counselor for the Navy at the Post Grad years ago. I grew up part of my life in Monterrey (until 10) and then he came home and said we were moving to Newport, RI (he had been transferred to the OCS up there). At the time, I was like: "Where?" We actually lived in Portsmouth at the north end of the island. I grew to absolutely love it. We were only there for 4 years, but it is such a cool place, especially if you like and appreciate architecture. I guess it was weird because of my age, but I really was into that at that age.

Watch out for the jellyfish. They swarm the beaches every year at a certain time (can't remember when it was). And when you get there, would you please stop in at the Newport Creamery and drink an Awful Awful for me. You can pick the flavor... all are good. Awful Awful's are like DQ Blizzards, but with frozen custard instead of ice cream.

Oh, and if you like REALLY good pizza, you have too look up Steve's Pizza in Portsmouth. Hopefully it is still around. It has been 25 years since I ate there, and still remember how good it was!

Yeah! My mom worked for Pearson Yachts there. They always had some fun events. Do they still run the Tall Ships festival through Newport. That was always cool. Oh, and by all means, make sure you keeps tabs on the date for the Newport Jazz Festival. My mom and dad were really into jazz, and drug me and sis along one year. I was blown away by a guy on a sax - Najee (sp?). Absolutely amazing!

Oh yeah... Newport is one of only 2 places I know in the US that you can go and watch Jai Alai played.

Thanks for all of the encouragement. I am in the Navy, a ship driver by trade. I just finished my masters in Space Systems Operations from NPS. This will be my second short stint in Newport. My first tour was right after I got commissioned. I was dating (my later to be wife) and having a great time enjoying Newport. Melissa is from VT so she'd drive down for most of the weekends and we had a great time aroudn the town. This time it will be much different, a wife and two young kids. So the late nights are probably going to be few, but it'll be great taking the kids around the area for the festivals and the sea life. I'll be there from the Thanksgiving timeframe until the end of June while I'm at department head school. After that I'll be off to Ingleside, TX to join a mine sweeper as the Chief Engineer.

The only reason I've been able to get so much work done to my car over the past two years is that I wasn't on a ship. Still trying to decide if I want to continue using it as a daily driver once I reach Texas. No A/C will probably have a larger part to play in that decision.

Anyone have any ideas about the chip though?
