sealant between cam tower and heads

What do people use for this no-gasket interface? I am thinking blue Hylomar.

I use Red Anaerobic Sealant, others use Loctite 474.. basically the same or Threebond 1131 or 1121 cant remember the #.. Pelican sells any of them.

In Waynes engine rebuilding book ( a good book and value for the money ) loctite 574 is recommended .

I have a question into Loctite Corp about the same question right now .

Our shop has been using Loctite 518 sealant for a few years with great results .

Both 518 and 574 are medium strength adhesives and are Anaerobic in nature .

I sent Wayne a PM and he replied that 574 is what Porsche recommends but felt 518 would also be fine .

We ( our shop ) has had problems with Hylomar and is the main reason we went to 518 .

You may also want to ask over on the engine rebuilding forum also .

I've used Loctite 518 (fills bigger gaps than 574) and ThreeBond 1104 (aka Yamabond) with good results. Loctite 518 is the red anerobic sealant GotaT refers too.

ThreeBond 1104 on mine; what Neil Harvey of Performance Developments uses, in this area. I also used it to seal up my case.

I just picked up a 3.6l motor with a dripping leak when the motor is tilted on it's side on the engine stand like this. ->



Is this the location you are talking about? ->



Looks like it's time to go to work on the new engine.

No, that is not the location.

it is the interface between the heads and the housing where the rocker arms and the cam shaft live. 6 heads and 2 housings, making a total of 6 surfaces to seal.

Remove the timing chain housing, reseal with new gasket and some dressing material like T-curil.

Jerry Woods uses Dow Corning 730. Overall I lean towards his way of sealing engines over Wayne's, but I'd hate to shell out the dough for the DC730 and would go with the Loctite 574. It's worked well on the few rebuilds I helped with. Here a good compilation:
