shift patterns

Please excuse the stupid question but....

I'm putting a 901 5 speed in my 65 VW, when I bought the trans it came with no shift knob. I am curious as to what the shift pattern is. is 1st gear to the top left with reverse on the bottom right? or other way around? I have seen both patterns on similar knobs.

I have a 901 in my 1971 911S.

1st is all the way over to the left and down towards the driver. Reverse is all the way left, against the reverse lock-out spring, and up away from the driver.

2nd is up in the plane of the shifter, 3rd down, 4th is a push to the right, then a push up and away. 5th is down below 4th.

Hope this helps. I really like my 901.

Thank you Flieger, that will help when it comes to adjusting the custom shift rod.

I'd love to have a car with that pattern. One of these days I'm going to have to get an early car.

great pattern

I prefer the dog legged pattern.
It's great when your doing muti point turns, just back and forth with the shifter, never over. Seems better winding through the mountain roads too.

and...

the 901 4 speed shift pattern is the same without the first gear position. Just exchange 2 through 5 with 1 through 4.

Furthermore, Matt. If you have a notchback...I would love to see it. Please post pics here or to me

shawnhilligas@cox.net I love those cars.

Shawn.
