And, work has begun on the Mary Stuart collar:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209138708.jpg nice alignment with the ducktail... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209138737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209138761.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209138787.jpg stage one, rough shape is going well! We're re-living our art school days around here. |
Keith, don't you mean "sano"? Are you an ex BMX'er?
Oh, and I got the template yesterday, thank you sir. |
Ah yes, sano, indeed.

Looking good. Here are a few shots of the real thing for inspiration. Thanks to Moorespeed in Austin TX for letting me take pictures a while back.

thanks! that's helpful.

|
one thing is certain, this car will not be subtle... nice work fellas.
|
hmm. after chewing on the proportions a bit, we decided to revise the shape:

True artistry!
|
Really interesting to see the progress. What is the procedure after you get the foam formed the way you want it? Looks gorgeous so far.
|
Wow! Why the shape change? Just going by the pics, it looked pretty close to perfect. Oh, BTW, hate to inform you, but the original still has its gutters:p

Great work and project. Just curious, i assume you guys are going to make a glass mold from these shapes... what are you going to use for you final layer before spraying your PVA? My buddy and i went from thishttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210193736.jpg
to this http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210193890.jpg To finally this http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210194100.jpg using a quick-dry plaster which could be sanded to a final shape and smoothness over the foam. However, it did 'spider crack' easily, was not perfect. Just curious what you 'pros' use. Thanks |
"pro" may not be the best term - but we both have art backgrounds (I'm a sculptor, even), and we did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night..
For this quick plug work we're using the foam with the drywall plaster for shape, then we'll paint and wax it. I used to bondo, but the foam suffers a bit and it ends up being additional work to get it back to where you want it. I've never really liked PVA - I'm unusual in that way, I suppose. Here is where we are today - the shape is a LOT better, IMHO. Considering that we can't pull molds off of Kitchak's car (and it has wider fenders as well), I feel like the overall shape and proportions are pretty good - nice and vintagey! good lines. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172677.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172717.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172780.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172810.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172846.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172888.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172918.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212172952.jpg |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212173157.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212173180.jpg and, the prototype for the hybrid 3.6/3.2 RSR fan shroud that we'll be using for that era-look: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212173353.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212173378.jpg |
Wow!
|
Is that fan shroud a "new product" or a one off? Looks nice.
|
new product. want one?
|
You guys should really think about going into another business. You don't really have the hang of this "fabrication" thing. Such sloppy work.
Mega ;) |
Keith, you might want to talk to this guy (in case you missed that on the off-topic)....!! http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/30/lithuanian-builds-car-from-polyurethane-foam/
|
lol - he's got the blue construction foam in there, too....
I'm digging the rear of the car, but something terrible happened to the front. We'll only be using the foam and goop to make the positive shape to create our mold from. Then it will be removed from the car and replaced with a proper cast wing. Thanks for the link, though, I love that stuff! |
Keith, I agree 100%. But you got to give him kudos for skill. I don't like the front either but overall he did a pretty respectable job IMHO....
Just be careful with solvents around that car. And God forbid he'll ever have a an eletrical fire |
Lookin good. That lithuanian dude is a hardcore masochist... i used small amounts of that inslulating foam for small details. cant image doing the majority of the car with it. too hard to shape. The hard part of this stuff is getting the shape smooth, with lotsa coats of fast-dry plaster.

ok, the shape is finalized (on the left side, lol) :D
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212760592.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212760626.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212760678.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212760714.jpg after we finalize the right-hand wing section, we'll coat the foam with a paint barrier, then a release agent, then we'll create FG molds from the positive. we'll make the final product in FG and will install on the car, then the car goes off to the paint shop. THEN we assemble the car. In the meantime, we're building a 3.8 w/PMOs for this thing. Should be pretty cool. |
automotive artwork, very cool! keep it coming. Should be nice and toasty in the shop during the day now ;-) so the stuff should dry pretty quickly when you're working with it.

still sorting that part! let me get the first run in and I'll come back w/pricing...
|
Great stuff Keith!
I'm about to embark on making a mold for an air dam that has gone out of production. I have a new one, and will use that as the plug. I'd love to watch your process here, and would be interested to see and know what products you will be using. It's been a few years since I dabbled in this. This is another interesting project you have, love the diary and pics! Thanks for taking the time to do it. |
Here is the updated version of the wing. Still needs some more tweaking but getting very close.
If anyone needs some sheet rock work I might be willing to do moonlighting. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213307923.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213308027.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213308246.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213308300.jpg |
Fantastic!!! Looks great!
What hubs are you going to run on that car? :) Cheers |
might as well hand hammer something out of a block of aluminum or titanium. Keith is developing mad skills. :)
|
Jeff, I'm hoping that the customer will go for some center lock hubs coming to market real soon "PCA Parade soon".
If he sticks with a five bolt setup maybe some forged 17" 3 pieces fuch wheels. |
hmmm, sounds very evil... (and expensive)
