Waynes Project Book is not available.

i did some projects on my car today.
but i have to say haynes books are sadly lacking.
they sum over a multi-part process with a point like '3. disassemble the engine'.

I'm exaggerating but whatever i want to do on the car it's seemingly bypassed by haynes in a 1 point term that hides all the things i need to know. and its so annoying! so for the last six months i've been keeping my eye out for waynes project book in europe on amazon.co.uk and i gotta say amazon are rubbish too!

the below link for waynes book on amazon.co.uk has been 'Temporarily out of stock' for at least 6 months - (it costs too much to ship it direct from the US for me we pay a tax on US items here)

wayne i want your book, i needed your book today in the garage, can you gently persuade the below link to read 'IN STOCK'? for us in europe?

but why not UK? a lot of people order from amazon uk and to specially order a 1-off navigating in german (for the english market) on amazon de for 1 thing seems like so much hard work? ...and the UK market has to pay for shipping from amazon.de
the worst thing is amazon UK keep recommending it to me when they don't stock it. (on the bright side they are advertising it to potential customers)

that'd be cool but we (only in denmark i think) pay hardcore tax on items from the US and ONLY the US. this is not helping US balance of payments for sure. we have to sign at the door for any items that are 'purchased' from the US and then pay a horrible percentage on top of the value. otherwise it can't be handed over, unless it's a 'gift' from a friend.
i and friends have found that even though buying stuff direct from pelican is a lot cheaper including shipping than buying from UK or Germany, when it arrives it doubles up and makes it not worthwhile!
so we now buy in europe, even if its a US product.
sorry - long dull story.
so unless you speak german, UK sources work out best generally.
it sucks but i and friends would still appreciate the book?!.....

Just noticed it says there's only 2 left, so this might become a moot point quickly, but one nice thing about amazon is how easy it is to use, you wouldn't really need to speak German to order there. I've already successfully ordered stuff from even the french amazon site, with absolutely zero command of the language. You can use your existing account, and the layout is identical for all amazon sites. The book will be 12€ cheaper than from the UK as well...

I wonder if you had another person ship it to you from Europe would the tax still apply?
I think that there are enough people on here that travel abroad that perhaps you could have one brought over and then mailed to you.

so the german one is 22,95 euros,
the french is 37,13 euros,
and the english is about 35 euros (24,99 pounds) and never available.
and the one on pelican is 15 euros (22 dollars) + dk tax for me

so the german one is the one to go for... i'll give it a try.

update 2009: it's f**king brilliant.
i always thought it might be a buddy's web thing where everyone says its great here on pelican but really its crap and everyones supporting wayne. thats not true. it IS brilliant. wayne, if you read this you're a genius. i think it every time i use the book. (no affiliation)

since i bought it over a year ago i've progressed so much with it. from jacking my car up correctly to carb adjustments, heat exchanger replacements, muffler swaps, electrcial projects, valve adjusts, dizzy rebuilds refits and adjusts, seat replacements, oil changes, etc etc i'm currently on a weber carb rebuild, i just love it. cant think of a thing it lacks except maybe a bigger ref section at the back with tons of tech reference in - torque figures and numerical garbage we need to access now and again.

If they are unavailable in this country, I've been buying car books from overseas (mostly England) since 1968. Yes, that costs more in shipment and duty, but the books usually offset that in their intrinsic value.

Like Wayne, I've written and sold car books for years, so let me give you and others reading this some advice: It may be cheaper to buy a book from Amazon, but if you want the best personal service and advice, buy that book from Pelican Parts or other automotive booksellers.

Creating a book is like raising a child. It takes forever, requires amazing dedication and patience, yet you don't always get what you thought you would! I've written two, and both took far more effort than even I expected. You put thousands of hours and dollars into a product and wait years for a return. Wayne's books are great, and I don't see how he finds the time to create them. Authors deserve proper compensation, and the closer to the author the bookseller is, the better the reward. Buying from Amazon seriously diminishes what little return an author gets and puts another nail in the coffin of independent bookseller, who often stocks esoteric books that Amazon refuses to support.

As the old bumper sticker read, "Support Your Local Gunslinger".
