I remember there used to be an Alpine or Eclipse unit that stowed the screen in the head unit itself and deployed it (out and up) as needed. Is that still an option these days?

I think the problem with unit like this is that the screen will: (1) hit the dash in our cars and be angled downwards and (2) block the center A/C vents

It is a "wired" connection camera. Wire runs from the camera, tapped reverse trigger wire into reverse light in right tail light then encased in 1/4" split loom wire protector and zip tied to oil lines running up to front fender then inside trunk through one of the existing rubber grommets near headlight and plugged into LCD screen's wire harness (RCA video input connector).

well, i can help you with everything but the nav

i have a kenwood x993 in my daily driver and i could not be happier. built in bt, sat compatible, direct usb support for all versions of ipod and iphone/touch including the latest generation. it also supports streaming bt audio. quite a few tuning options but not so many as to confuse a beginner. 3 sets of pre-outs, wireless remote, excellent sound quality, aux-in, cd changer control, 9 preset colors and a user defined as well, very good ipod search ability. the only downside is that there is some glare on the glass screen in sunlight. the lcd is good it's just that the screen is flat and gets some glare. if they would have given it a slight texture it would be perfect. i love it at night.

for nav i run a garmin 360.

Thanks for the recommendation Nineball. I may have to give up the integrated Nav in my upgrade, but that is not a feature I often use in the 911 anyway

Hey Mark,

You inspired me, I just purchased and installed the JVC NX-5000 NAVI/DVD Player w Bluetooth. Screen is small but adequate.

Question, from the Camera, where did you run the wires into the engine bay's right side to tap the reverese light switch wire?

Also have you considered running the wires thru the tunnel, Defrost wire access or even the left side where the cluster of wires go to the DME?

Jim

Jim, I considered several different routes but felt at the time that route I chose was the easiest. Here is pic of the camera wire running under the bumperette along the underside of the bumper and through the gap at the valance. The reverse trigger wire runs back to the tail light and taps into the reverse lead.

you know if you just go faster than everyone else you don't need to worry about blind spots.

Draco does that thing have a special external antenna for the GPS? Can people actually hear you talking via the bluetooth in the 911? Does it have an external mike for that?

regards draco's head unit, I talked to him through it. It sounds good, not as lound compare to when he talks on his cell phone but funny thing is it's clearer. Yes, sound quality is clearer than his cell phone, just a little less on the sound volumn. Probably because the distant from the microphone.

axvel,
that is the spot I like for the camera but I affraid the heat will kill the camera quick. How long have you have it there? Is it ok if I can come to see in person?
Thanks

Ohh i have had it in for the past 2 years with no problems. Sure you can come and see it, no heat, up there. I only did it since it's the Fiberglass tail and pretty much has no value. BTW i don't need a switch i connected the camera to a wire in the backup light so it turns on when the gear is in reverse.

LOL, I always use the 3 second rule to change lanes after passing a car. The only problem is if he is a jerk like me he will speed up to pass me up then BOOM "TC". Thank God never happened but that is what I do.

As far as the External Antenna for the GPS. yes, it does have a small 1 inch square antenna. But luckily I spoke to a tech at the store where I bought it from and he suggested that I place underneath the dash surface where there are no metal obstructions.

I found a perfect place, once you remove the clock, you can reach in and feel for the parts where the metal housing has holes/gaps. there was a place that was just big enough to squeeze the antenna between the hard foam casing and the metal housing. The antenna was magnitized so it will not slip during driving.

Yes, there is a external mic. I clipped it under the knee pad rail. Kind of far but works fine enough. Apparently my speach is hard to discern but I can hear them crystal clear.

I am thinking of placing it in the Guage Cluster. There is a pre-existing hole where the the Cab's have their light for the top operation. Is almost pa perfect fit but just a tin sheet so I bought a grommet to place in there for a snug fit.

I did not go that route at first because I was reluctant to cut the leather on the cluster. But if I get too many complaints about soound on the other end I will pull the trigger. For now it is very stealthy.

Jim

Once again, thanks Brother.

Just wonder where you tapped thru the fire wall to get into the engine bay?

Jim
