Back-up Camera on a 911?

Why not?

As long as the Nav screen has a back-up camera input, why not use it?

Alpine TME-740BT 7" LCD Screen
Pioneer ND-BC2 Camera (CCD chip w/135 degree horizontal field of view)

UPDATE: Screen is Bluetooth Enabled - scroll down for info on hooking up phone to car speakers.

the pioneer buc cam is the nicest on the market imo, short of going with a pro-video setup

fyi it does show the reversed image so don't try to use it for recording track sessions for those not familiar with buc's

Over-ride switch to manually activate camera if not in reverse. Provides full visibility of blind spots on the highway - very helpful for lane changing.

Why not put it on the front for a cool low-to-the-ground view while you're driving!

That looks really nice. Is that also a couple of extra power ports I see there to the right of it? One with a flashlight hanging out of it? Nice install!

Yep, mounted to the underside of the cruise control brain (3 port unit attached to a piece of sheet metal which is double side foam taped to the cruise control and held tight by a couple of zip ties).

Very cool. Keep an eye out; it's right behind the muffler so you might get some heat issues...

Good point. I think the camera will be OK b/c it's on the opposide side of the valence that serves as somewhat of a heat shield. However, I will revisit my orig plan of putting some small bolts through the bracket as the 3M adhesive strip may be prone to failure with heat.

Tested camera on/off switch on drive to the office this AM. Very cool. Fish eye lens makes thinks look much farther away than they are. Big benefit: cars in blind spot are in full view in the back-up camera - might be beneficial for lane changing as an addl info source.

Update: Apline LCD Screen is Bluetooth enabled. Just completed the phone installation this week. The LCD screen pairs with my crackberry, automatically mutes the head unit for incomming & outgoing calls and sends the audio to the car speakers via RCA Out jacks on the LCD harness to an Ai-Net input on the digital sound processor. The screen has a touchscreen dial function and will display my entire address book via Bluetooth link. Took two calls to Alpine Tech Support to get it all working but all is good now!

The LCD screen has a mic that I mounted just under the center vents. It has a noise cancellation feature and a gain adjustment that allows for cabin noise to be filtered out. I'll post some pics.

It's a 911 not a space shuttle.

I can't wait until we're on the road and I can do lewd things in front of the camera.

Now you need a record feature!

Hi thomas,
Over a year now, can you give comments/experience on the blind spots, below? Do you still have the camera below the license plate? What angle degree your camera Has?
Thanks thomas.

The camera has 135 degree horizontal field of view. After a year I'm still very happy with it. It is very helpfull backing out of blind parking spaces as the camera has a greater field of view once it clears the adjacent car than the view through the rear window. Here are some comparison views:

Macro Scene View:

Pathetic view through the rear view mirror:

Direct view through the rear window:

Back-up camera view: (actual image is much clearer than photo due to poor lighting - I had to turn the flash off so the image looks grainy) I'll post this same image at night for comparison. Night vision is actually very good.

I love this whole setup! Not to hijack but... ready to update my 90's Eclipse head Unit. What is the current thinking around an integrated Nav, Sat Radio (Sirius), Ipod compatible, Integrated Bluetooth unit?

You left out DVD and 5.1 sound processor! The integrated system works great. Due to road and A/C fan cabin noise (audible on the other end) I usually use the LCD screen's bluetooth to check msgs and my bluetooth ear piece to place or take calls unless I'm parked.
