Acronyms, Abbreviations, Technical Terms & Jargon

In preparation for Wayne's Wiki (sounds kinda nasty, doesn't it?) and to help out new people, I thought we might start this.

It is for Porsche-specific terms, or at minimum, automobile specific terms.

Here is a start:

Long Nose = Early Car = the 911s made up thru 1973, which had a longer nose and hood than the cars with large impact bumpers from 1974 to 1989

Mid-year = 2.7L cars = 911s from 1974 thru 1977

SC = SUPER CARRERA; also Stupor Car; 911s from 1978 to 1983, all with 3.0L CIS motors. Terminology was also used on some hot 356's.

Carrera = most commonly used to mean std. production 911s from 1984-89- all with 3.2L DME based motors. Can also refer to hot 356's and the legendary RS 2.7L cars as well as a few other special models over time.

Impact Bumper 911 = 911s from 1974 thru 1989, a collective terms consisting of mid-years + SC's + Carrera's -- all had large "duck-bill" or platypus impact bumpers on them.

CIS = K-Jetronic-- a hydraulic signal based form of fuel injection, used on the 1973.5 911T, on Mid-years, and SC's; sometimes mistakenly called mechanical injection. It does contain mechanical components (as do all FI systems) but the signal is not carried thru a mechanical linkage.

DME = Bosch Digital Motor Electronics - a type of electronic fuel injection, that began on 911's in 1984

EFI = any kind of electronic fuel injection; so-called because a computer monitors a variety of sensors and determines how much fuel to inject into the intake and when; beginning in 2006 (?) factory DME's can inject fuel directly into the cylinder just as diesels do.

MFI = Mechanical Fuel Injection; used on all 911's from 196?? until 1973.5, and on the higher performance E and S models until the end of 1973. MFI is the famed fuel injection in the Early production and racing cars. Specialized EFI systems are now superior but it was "something else" at the time it was used and for perhaps a decade thereafter. The system was based on a diesel injection pump used on tractors, but achieved much fame and reknown on Porsche race cars.

Randy, I think this is a good thread.

However, I'd lay back from the SC/Carrera thing. When one considers the 356 models, SC and Carrera apply as in the 356SC and the Carrera GT and GS. Then there was the mid-year Carrera to add confusion. Unless there is a section to sort all of this out, I'd leave them out.

PS, don't forget BFH. An important tool used in all Porsche repairs.

ABD = Automatic Braking Differential
ABS = Anti-lock Brake System
ACC = Automatic Climate Control
ASR = Acceleration Slip Reduction
ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid

BAS = Braking Assist System
CAN = Controller Area Network
CAT = Catalytic Converter
CDI = Common (Rail) Direct Injection
CO = Carbon Monoxide


DI = Direct Injection
DIY = Do It Yourself
DOHC = Dual OverHead Cams
DRL = Daytime Running Lights

ESP = Electronic Stabilization Program (also 4-ESP on 4-wheel drive vehicles)
ETR = Emergency Tensioning Retractors (seatbelt part)
ETR = Evaporator Temperature Regulator (climate control part)
ETS = Electronic Traction
System (also 4-ETS on 4-wheel drive vehicles)

FI = Fuel Injection
FS = For Sale
FSS = Flexible Service System (that little "wrench" light on the dash)
FWD = Front Wheel Drive - for Four Wheel Drive, use "4WD"

HC = HydroCarbons; broadly, any chemical compound with hydrogen and carbon it it; more specifically a type of pollutant emitted by internal compbustion engines (except those running on pure hydrogen)

HFM = Hot-Film Mass-airflow (sensor)
HP = Horse Power
HVAC = Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning
IP = Injection Pump

LMAO =
LSD = Limited Slip Differential; a drug commonly used by posters in the off-topic section

NLA = No Longer Available
NOS = New Old Stock
NOx = Oxides of Nitrogen; the x is the number of oxygen molecules in the compound, typically 2 or 3

OE = Original Equipment
OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer
OBD = On-Board Diagnostics
OD = Outside Diameter

PO = Previous Owner
PM = Preventive Maintenance
PS = Power Steering

RKE = Remote Keyless Entry

SOHC = Single OverHead Cam
SRS = Supplemental Restraint System (airbags & belt tensioners)

SUV = Sport Utility Vehicle

TDC = Top Dead Center
TDM = Technical Data Manual
TO = Trap Oxidizer
TSB = Technical Service Bulletin
TTO= Trailing Throttle Oversteer (Newbies need to be aware of that one!)

VIN = Vehicle Identification Number; US Law sets specific formats for these; over the years Porsche VINs have followed at least 3 different formats.

Tech. Spec. Book = Technical Specifications booklets; these were small, note-card sized booklets that Porsche published on different MY 911s. They are now mostly NLA and quite valuable as they are chock full of important information

MY = model year

Ferry = Ferdinand Porsche, the son of "the old man" and one of the creators of the 356, who ran the Porsche business after his father died

Piech = in general, the Piech family or the in-laws of the Porsche family at the time of the 356 & 911;
= specifically, the grandson of the old man who seems to have inherited his mechanical DNA and irascible personality. He ran the Porsche company out of money by building race cars that regularly crushed all opposition, was involved in 911 engine design and improvements. After leaving Porsche, he worked for VW and eventually came to run the entire VW Group, greatly expanding it and building a huge variety of luxury, sports, economy cars and making it a competitor to Toyota, and... running it out of money.

Butzi = Butzi Porsche, grandson of the old man, a son of Ferry's and the doppelganger to Piech. Butzi seems to have inherited his grandfathers design sensibility. He, together with Irwin Komenda, is responsible for the classic design of the 911.

Wienie-King = Wendolyn Wiedeking, a bean counter brought in to Porsche to get it back on its financial feet. He was successful, if you don't count destroying the soul of the company...

It is spelled K-Jetronic. I think most accurately described as a hydro-mechanical system.

Bosch MFI was used not only on "some of the higher performance models," it was used on ALL 911s (T, E, and S), at least for the US versions.

Bosch MFI was used on the E and S all the way to the end of the '73 model year. CIS replaced MFI on the US '73T midyear.

Thanks, I tried to address milt's and the's issues in a brief way. I don't think we can leave out SC etc. - they are just too common.

I hope others will add to this - even if they don't know the term it could be posted and answered here - it would then be simple to go thru this thread and pull out terms for a wiki....

Some more:

EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation - a pollution reduction system that helps burn some of the exhaust gases undercertain engine conditions; IIRC most of these have been superseded by better DME systems.

t-bar = torsion bar - these are what the 911 uses for springs

PPI = Pre Purchase Inspection

Also, it's Fuchs not Fuch.

Fuchs = Fox in German.

You can have one Fuchs wheel or multiple Fuchs wheels.

Unless, you Fuch something up.

SWB = Short Wheel Base, 911s from 1965 - 68


What about all the options and option codes?

What about all the racing related options, like Sport Kit I, Sport Kit II, Rallye exhaust etc. ?

If it's going to be like a wikipedia then it'll be self-correcting after a while etc.

Some more CIS acronyms:

AAR = auxiliary air regulator

AAV = auxiliary air valve (This is probably more relevant to a Porsche wiki than "all activity vehicle" from the above post)

CSV = cold start valve
