ragtop - is it a solid pin or is it a roll-pin (hollow with a longitudinal 'split')?

if it's solid i would imagine it's from one of the needle bearing cages the gears roll on.

Hey 86!

Give me a fax number and I will fax the parts diagram from my factory manual. There is a "Spiral Pin" that looks like yours on the inside of the tranny that goes in the "Castle Nut" that screws into the "Reverse Gear Set". Also there is a second pin that goes inside the tranny for 5th gear. At least I can read the pictures!

Ben,

From the equal-length discoloration at both ends ... that is, with 100% certainty, a needle-bearing roller!

That looks like a needle bearing from the input shaft. 2 different sets there, and also on the pinion shaft gear cluster. I hope it was missed in the tranny rebuild (stuck to some goo) and you just flushed it out.

good luck

Okay warren a 'needle bearing roller' you say.
Excuse my lack of knowledge, but is it important?.
As you may remember, this is a 4 month old rebuild by Vertex (6 month warrantee)
Does it warrant another rebuild?
Is it that serious or what?
You were right about a small amount of discolouration about 1mm at either end!.
Should I drive it?
Should I even worry about it?
Please advise (I trust you guys more than the mechanics who profit by my lack of knowledge.)
thanks Ben
PS Huey recieved the fax thanks!

Ben,

The significance of the discoloration is that it is a 'used' bearing part, and was probably inadvertently left inside during the rebuild, but the magnet did its' job ... and kept it out of harm's way! I believe that the roller is from a 5th gear roller cage, as that bearing has to be removed by hand during the disassembly, and replaced during final assembly steps. And, no, I don't think you have anything to worry about! I believe you can drive your car without worry!

You may want to discuss this matter with Vertex, to see what they have to say. I'm sure they can show you a 5th gear roller cage for comparison with the roller you found, and verification that it is the proper length for that bearing.
