Trans swap help needed
Hi Folks,
Im getting ready to swap the Sporto trans from a 70 911E for a 901 from a 69 912. I am planning to pull the 901 trans and the pedal cluster. Anything else needed?? Do I need the half shafts from the 912? Shifter? Thanks Maze |

Maze,
I need a little more information: Is the ‘70E the car currently with the Sportomatic and going to get the 5-speed from the ’69 912? Does the ‘70E still have the MFI? What are the type number and transmission numbers of the 912 5-speed (902/16, #519xxxx)? Yes, you will need the pedal assembly, floor board, carpet piece, clutch cable, Bowden tube, shift handle, etc from the 912. You will also need a 215 mm flywheel, pilot bearing and complete clutch for an early 911 (don’t forget the flywheel bolts and washer). You shouldn’t have any axle issues, just have new bolts, Schnorr washers and gaskets. You will find the steel clutch cable tube in the tunnel packed full of 38-year old grease that needs to be cleaned out and fresh lube installed on the cable. Pay attention to the clearance between the rear end of the clutch cable and the oil pipe under the bell housing. Be sure and use the steel (not OE plastic) link between the cable and the release arm (a 914 part). Replace the plastic pieces on the clutch release bearing'ears' and the white plastic cup in the release arm. The long throttle link between the transmission bell crank and the engine is different. I ihink the 912 part may work. Check the length and possible interference where it goes through the engine tin. The MFI throttle bodies will need steel plugs installed in place of the vacuum check valves. You will need to plug the two Sportomatic oil hose ports on the oil tank. You may want to exchange the combination instrument for the 911 5-speed version or have your Sportomatic version repainted with temperature numbers. (You can even use the Sportomatic over-temperature warning light and switch.) There are a LOT of parts to remove from the engine and chassis (oil pump on left cam, vacuum reservoir, wiring and more). Save everything. While not very valuable, they can keep other Sportomatics running. There are also some ‘while you are there’ issues you could attend to. Replacing the master cylinder and flex brake hoses come to mind. Servicing the MFI pump belt and toothed-pulleys, a new left cam seal and flywheel seal are useful. The 912 transmission could use an input shaft seal and the ‘Dam Seal’ mod. Best, Grady

This conversion has been discussed a number of times. I went to the 'search' button above, went to 'advanced search' and put in 'sporto conversion'. Make sure you select '911 Technical Forum' in the 2nd window menu and you will find many threads. I suggest you read through and find what applies to your situation and you will likely find most of what you need, if not all of it.
The archives here are chock full of just about anything you need. Good luck.
