Engine Tin Color

I notice that the engine tin covers have been different colors through the years. I imagine its due to displacement, but I wonder if the color should match the year of the car? or whether the engine color should match the displacement?

The engine TIN is all a semi flat/semi gloss black...I think you must be talking the fiberglass fan shroud that directs the cooling air over the engine?

In which case...I'm not an expert...but I have noticed differences depending on MY and displacement.

I have a red one on my 911SC 3.0

I remember a yellow one on a customers '72 911T

I'm sure others will chime in. I know I have seen green, black, and yellow on
'77 and earlier engines.

Any experts on the fan shrouds?

Red = early S, RS

Green = early E, or CIS based 2.7L 911'S' (which isn't really an S)

Black = later years

natural (translucent amber) = R and some other racers, 904?

yup, engine shroud. That's what I meant.

So if I have a stock SC, then it is red. When I modify the 3.0 & put in to my 69 E, is it more correct to go with green or translucent?

green for an E (but you won't really have an E motor, will you??)

it is a special color green too...

paint will never replicate the true color & patina of a real FG green engine shroud, but can look quite nice

search for the threads on exactly how to prep., etc.

Randy,

That's why I thought a race colored shroud might be more appropriate.

Though I like the sleeper idea better. Remove the 3.0 badge on the engine grill now, put a green shroud on and then watch newer 911 owner's eyebrows raise as I pass them and pull away . I always get a chuckle when the Boxer owner's wives say "that's such a cute little car". Then when I fire the engine, the husband's ears perk right up. hehehe
