I was reading through my rebuild notes and I remembered something I'd like to pass along. When I disassembled my motor I removed the little plate that links the accellerator rod from the front of the car to the linkage that attaches to the CIS unit. On this plate there are supposed to be a couple small nylon bushings for the linkage. Mine were nonexistant...not even a trace...so it appears that I have been driving around (most likely for a long time) with no bushings on this plate. I bought a new set of Bronze Weltmiester bushings that will go back there when I get to it. I have no idea if the fact that they were gone was affecting the performance of my car but it would make sence to think so as there was a LOT of slop in that linkage with no bushings. You can check yours by using an inspection mirror and a flashlight to check your bell crank bushings. They are located on the left side of the engine on top, moreless behind the runners. (the linkage is for the throttle on the CIS)
I have no idea how hard it would be to replace them with the motor still in the car but it is something that some of you might want to check. Good luck, |

Leland:
So the items numbered 13 at the URL http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1978-83/7-2-2.JPG are the ones you are referencing? And thanks mightily for all the pics of your rebuild. I am actually thinking that I want to rebuild my engine just for the experience! Jw |

Items 12-15 in the diagram are mounted on a stud on the driver's side of the 915 transaxle, and the #13 bushings are very easy to change! Doubtful those are what Leland is talking about!

I think it is item #65 at
http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1978-83/1-7-2.JPG To check for oil leaks, I removed the complete intake unit with the motor in the car. Described by JWW in http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/007406.html On my throttle lever plate, the linkage attached to the ball-shaped heads is worn out. ------------------ Robert / 80 Targa [This message has been edited by robs (edited 05-10-2001).] |

Aha! Thanks much; I will take a look at it when the eng/trans comes out in a couple of weeks.

Warren, the bushings I'm talking about are mounted on top of the engine case right next to the case breather housing. At least it is on SCs. I looked at the diagram and it looks correct from memory but it dosen't actually show the plate so I'm not sure. And no it's not the linkage on the transaxle it's in the engine compartment.
Hopefully I didn't spark more confusion than help. ![]() |

Hello
Also check the lever as they come loose on the shaft. ( early version was just rivetet on later where welded ) Have a look at the pullrod as the end will shuffle thin over the time and will break. Early cars have the open rubber coupler forwrd in the tunnel replace with never fail proof unit. Porsche used the same bushings on the trany and the engine linkage transititions. ( Carbs and MFI have them too ) Keep everything slightly greased and you never have trouble Grüsse |
