I had the same issues with my 78 SC. It was a sign that the starter was going out. I replaced the battery and checked the grounds, etc. The starter finally wouldn't engage or crank, just click. Changed the started to a hi-torque model and never had another starter/hesitation issue. Cranks right away!

Check all wires and battery terminal for corrosion; open the connections and use dielectric grease. Check all ground connections, especially where the neg cable connects to the body. (It's hidden out of sight)

Thanks. The car's up in the air right now for a steering rack freshen, so I might as well do it now. Cheers, Mike.
