Hmmmmmmm. An Anti-Freeze Odor in an Air cooled 911?!

Strange.

Cannot find any radiator, hoses, drain line or reservoirs in my 1973.5T! No oil leaks, battery acid is staying in the battery, no fuel leaks, entire windshield washing system removed a decade ago by the previous owner, no smoke from under the dash, ain't the hot dog and onions I had the other day or gaseous emissions as a result of complete digestion!

So, why am I smelling anti-freeze (ethylene glycol) when I take a drive? Weird!
I thought perhaps its the guy in front of me with the AC running, engine temps increasing and maybe an overflow on the coolant, but lately its been too frequent.

A couple of theories (that small mouse stuck in window defrost vent back in 1977 has finally given up, or those panties of Ginger's ole Roger threw on the dash that night in 1975 at the river that never could be found are now showing up!!!!

Any ideas?

Bob

Did someone de-ice you?

Sorry, dunno. Maybe some spilled on the engine from working on another car or something?

Windscreen wash? I think that sometimes has anti-freeze in it.

Sometimes brake fluid can come close. Check to see if you have any leaking inside near the MC.

+1 on the brake fluid. Some brands do have a somewhat sweet odor to them similar to coolant.

I've heard of using anti-freeze in strut housings to transfer heat into the outer tube for cooling.

Brake fluid is a definite possibility. Don't forget to look under the brake pedal for a leak, or even in the tunnel for hard line leaks.

I have too. Could be leaking.

But leak at master cylinder more likely - brake fluid.

It must be a leaking water pump or maybe bad muffler bearings. Have you checked your turn signal fluid? I hear it has anti-freeze in it.

Maybe it thinks it's a 996

Ok, I'm sorry, but that was for a buddy that I know is watching!

Fun answers, and good leads.......

Well I probed a bit and found neither mouse nor panties! When I first bought the car and turned the defroster on a 1974 parking ticket blew out though!

I'll check the brake fluid reservoir first (I use that Blue Racing fluid) and sniff around in that area. At least I do not have to worry about an infamous water pump going on me like I did in my 944 ownership days.

I had an issue with recharging the system with R134 recently. I wonder if its related to an AC leak?

Thanks

Bob

Don't remember what the oil in the R134a system smells like.

But if the smell started shortly after that...
