crackling noise
Pelicans,
I get an odd crackling noise coming from the rear of my car, usually under hard acceleration. It almost sounds like crinkling cellophane. Any thoughts? The car is an stock 87 Carrera with 146K miles. Cheers, Nathan

Check your CV Joint Rubber Boots to see if they are cracked, it may be a CV Joint Issue.
Or Rear Torsion Plate? make certain the torsion cover sits in middle of the plate and not touching.

Are you sure you don't have engine pinging?

Am I sure I don't have engine pinging? Uh, no, I'm not sure. I've never heard pinging that sounded like this though, and don't know why it would ping.
Its a US spec car running on premium gas, in a reasonably good state of tune (as far as I know). I mentioned the sound is usually associated with hard acceleration, key word is usually, not always...

Pinging can be hard to detect by ear. One needs a mechanic's stethescope or long screwdriver to hear it sometimes. If you adjust the timing and it goes away, it could be pinging. You could try a bottle of octane booster or a god engine workout to blow out the carbon.
With detonation, the car will run hotter. Any of these symptoms sound familiar?
