Idenify the noise
You can hear it here:
http://members.shaw.ca/midnightluck/noise.mp3 At the time of recording: engine up to operating temperature, oil level and pressure normal, car sitting level. Same noise when engine is cold. Recently installed a used Carrera tensioners, disassembled and cleaned in ultrasonic bath which have been problem free. Tried with the fan belt disconnected but the noise is still there. Unknown mileage/time since last valve adjustment - one coming up very soon. It's coming from the driver side bank of the engine, most likely from the valve area. What do you think it is?

In case it wasn't clear, I'm talking about the metallic squeeling just as the engine stops turning.

is there something stuck in the crankshaft pulley well? Whatever it is, it sounds dry.

Just a guess, but I would check the alternator bearing. Try again with fan belt disconnected.

But don't run it for long without the belt.

As I mentioned the noise persists without the fan belt. I thought it might even be a squeeky belt but that's not it either. No foreign object in the pulley area. A/C compressor gone, never had an air pump.
