Another 915 "sloppy shifter" thread
Hi all,
I'll soon be sorting out this issue in my newly acquired '80 911 SC. I'll replace all the bushings they show here on Pelican. However the issue I'm concerned with is the shifter is not "centering" itself (i.e. you can move it to the position between 1st and 2nd and it will stay there). Basically it will flop around from the neutral position to the position between 1st and 2nd. Am I looking at more than bushings? I haven't pulled it apart yet but what should I expect? Also, the 1st gear synchro is toast. I see that this is a common problem on the 915. Should I pull that out and have it replaced or just leave it as is? TIA!

OEM 915 Flop.
If you want that out, you will need a gate shift kit, like a Sienes Gate Shift Kit sold by our Host. I recently placed it in my baby and WOW what a difference.

the 915 shifter is ONLY spring loaded from the 5th and reverse side so your shifter is acting properly
I recently upgraded to the wevo shift coupler and love it...feels more solid with less slop

Welcome to another local guy! Drop by our weekly get-togethers behind Chapter's at Sherway Gardens, Saturday mornings at 10am.
Unfortunately, that's the way a 915 is supposed to feel. I've always said they're the weakest part of the 911. I might try that additional spring, next time I've got it all open and apart.

I strongly disagree - rebuilding it even back to stock NEW parts makes a huge differance

Ed, that is some beautiful work. I like the Derlin Bushing concept. Have you put it on your car yet?

A couple of years ago I replaced every busing in the shifter system and it was a huge improvement. I used the brass coupling bushings from our host plus the rest of the bushings that they sold. The brass transmits a little bit of noise but is very solid in feel I really like it. In my opinion this is as good as a stock shifter setup can be without going to the next level like the Seine and others.

+1 on the Seine Systems gate shifter. I'm not even using the gate part - just the spring system that centers the shifter on 3-4. One thing I had to do though - I had to add a 1/4" plastic spacer to the bolt for the Seine spring. The short shift kit moved everything up so high it wasn't possible to tighten the nut on the spring bolt all the way without a spacer.
Besides the factory short shift kit, I also added the wevo coupler. Also re-did the center bushing in the linkage. All of that work - and changed the fluid (Royal Purple transmission fluid), and it is perfect. Well - as perfect as a 915 can be. Ken
