What type of alternator do I need?
I have a 79SC and need what i believe to be a new alternator and/or regulator. I'd rather replace both just to make my life easier; but how do I know which I need...internal reg or external? Is there an easy way to tell?
Where can I get one? I see them on eBay, but not sure about that. I searched Pelican and can't find them either; so I stand to accidentally blow $150-300 on the chance the alternator will fit. I have Wayne's book too, it says I need an alternator removal tool, by dumb luck, is that in the tool pouch? It kinda looks familiar... Thanks!

79SC= external regulator
do NOT get an internal reg, this was a retrograde step by Porsche. search here for extensive details on the fix

Your '79 SC originally was fitted with an alternator that uses an external regulator. To determine if you still have the original type setup look at the end of the shaft that protrudes from the middle of the alternator and holds the belt pulley and engine cooling fan in place. If the shaft's end is flat you have an original type alternator, if the shaft has a recess for an Allen wrench, you already have an alternator with an internal regulator (many early cars have already been updated). In addition, the pulley nut for the alternator that uses an external regulator requires a 22mm wrench, while the alternator that uses an internal regulator requires a 24mm wrench. Not sure what an "alternator removal tool" is. Hope this helps!

Okay, got a line on a new alternator, next question is...regulator. Does an alternator with external regulator include the regulator? Or do i need to purchase a regulator as well?
Thanks again &sorry for the redundant questions, but I want to do this once. (actually I paid about $500 2 years ago for this and don't want to pay that much again; nor do i want to do it again).

Normally an alternator with an internal regulator comes with a new regulator fitted, but an alternator that uses an external regulator does not come with a regulator.

It is located on the electrical console at the left side of the engine compartment.

Thanks, if this is the fix, then I don't need to pull the alternator, john, you're a lifesaver!

Why do you think you need a new alt or reg? What are the symptoms?
