Dead Battery!Alt or Batt. problem ?HELP
Sunday I tried to start the car. Nothing ! not a sound, interior light very dim. With jumping cables on, with the other car idling, no luck . Let it ran for a few minutes, then revd it up a bit, it started, it appear to ran like always. I put a meter on , reved the engine the meter did not move. Does it mean its the alternator which needs replacing due to no charging ? The battery is a #49 new on 12/06 not even 2 years. If its the alt. can it be replaced by an amateur with regular tools. Help please.

It sounds like your battery has a internal short. Take it to a store and have it tested. I bet you will find a dead cell. Once a battery dies like that you usually can't even jump start the car. And yes the alternator can be replaced with regular tools. It is not simple but I would say it is not a particularly difficult job.

Is the warning light on?
When the bulb is burned out, Alt will not charge. Bulb was changed from 2W to 4W with the internal regulator. Test battery at rest 12.5 V test battery at idle 13.0-13.5 test at 2500 RPM 13.5-14.5 MAX

I started the car again this am, it took some effort from the other running car to do so. Had it running for a few minutes ,with NO red light. as I reved the moter, the meter moved a little bit. I will drive it wed to the battery dealer. I am hoping the alt. is OK. since there is no light. There are 2 red lights when ignition is on. thanks for the feedback.

The problem has been resolved. It was a v dead ( before its time) battery. Replaced with a better more recent technology model, at no cost: FREE. Nice to have the Carrera back to normal. thanks guys, and happy 911 driving !!!

If your meter didn't indicate anything, it sounds like you may have a problem with your meter. What kind is it? If the engine was running, either the alternator or the battery (whichever or both was working) would have indicated something on the order of 12 volts.
A AA battery should measure 1.5 volts. Try it. Sherwood |
