Acceptable Operating Temp

I have a debate going with a friend of mine of what is acceptable operating temps in a 911. My range was 190 to 220, he says 200 - 240. We both agree 250 is too high.

190

I like to stay close to 100 degrees plus ambient air temperature. ex 80 plus 100 is 180. 240 is way too built up heat in the engine.

OK Milt, myabe a better question is running the car at a temp of 240 for a 3-4 hour drive really not good for the engine?

best power and life expectancy will be ~190F+/-, moving away from that # increases wear and reduces power

AshEvan,

If you want to go by logic you might feel that whatever P's engineers marked on the gauge is-what-it-is ; when it gets near the red line its time to cool down.

There are a few things that will affect a temp rise, such as ambient, a long pull up a hill, running with the ac on, running lean, ambients, timing problems, etc.

Here is a lazy thread search for ya:

Is My Oil Temperature Too Hot
Oil Temperature gauge Calibration????
2.7L oil temperature questions
Which cylinder is the best for an overall cylinder head temperature reading?
Troubleshooting oil temperature problem
Extreme Oil Temperature 74' 2,7s
Ideal Oil Temperature
Is there anything wrong with this temperature reading?
Normal Operating Temperature
Oil temperature issues - again!
Interesting.... (Retard Ignition -- increase temperature?)
911 Temperature
What Temperature?
Oil temperature concerns
3.2 normal operating temperature range
Temperature on 86 Carerra
Oil Temperature Advice
Safest Operating Temperature... ?

You win that one, hands down!

Tell your friend that he gets to buy lunch for everyone here.
