What did you find out about the bolt I would hate to see you put all this nice looking stuff on a long block that has its days numbered.

Its SHROUD PAINTIN' time. What color, fellas? Yellow, for "T"??? , Liar's red? Flat Black? Wurth Satin black? Or, shiny Black?
I will not paint it red, I'm torn between black and yellow. Yellow would be correct but look pretty lonely. C'mon, what do you think? My fan housing is gloss black, my fan is a medium "porsche"-ish grey, and my intake runners are also grey. This is primer. ![]() I'd like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to the guy who invented the "hose clamp method." Piece of cake. ![]() Nice, clean oil cooler goes in! ![]() Valves adjusted, covers on. Wish it was this easy everytime, I bet. Is there a torque spec for the adjusting nuts? ![]() Progress! ![]()

Ah, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now *I* am the master.
Not really, but I'm getting there. I figure this is about as clean as it will ever be, so I had to take a pic. ![]() Oooh yummy ceramic coating. ![]() Oooh nifty powder-coated everythings. ![]() I kind of recognize the futility a little bit about trying to make these things look pretty, but I learned a lot. ![]() And, every fuel or vacuum line has been replaced, from the tunnel back. Lots of nice shiny new nutz and spring washers and stuff everywhere. New seals everywhere (except for chain boxes, I hope that doesn't bite me in the butt. New alternator bearings and brushes. New terminals some fresh heat shrink on the harness. New starter. resurfaced flywheel and new clutch disc, and TO bearing repacked. Getting closer all the time! I swear I'm gonna drive this thing in 2009.

Cogar - looks great! Im getting ready to do a bit of this myself. Any recommendations on the powder coating (what parts to coat) and what do they charge for this?
I thought about painting my shroud but got concerned that it would start peeling from the heat. What did you use for paint? Did you wrap the wires below the shroud to the alternator with anything special to extend their life?

in regards to the "mystery bolt". I think a hole was punched in your case and repaired that way. I read a thread a while back that had an identical repair done to it. I'll see if I can track down the tread and post a link

I powdercoated: The engine mount bar and engine mount (pulley cover), All the engine tin, the coil bracket, top and bottom valve covers, the fan and pulley half, and the fan housing. I also powdercoated the intake runners, but '73 intake runners are a one year only kind of thing, and they do not hold the injectors, and are smooth. Otherwise, on a (not '73) engine I think powdercoating the runners would be kinda weird. previously they were painted black. Some people frown on getting paint near where the fan belt will rub, but I'm counting on it rubbing off in the first two minutes of the engine running. You need to make sure if you powder coat the fan that you tape off the ends of the fan, the tolerance is pretty tight to the fan housing, as everyone will tell you. In addition, you need to find a powdercoater who is confident in his ability to powdercoat magnesium parts. IF your car has magnesium top valve covers, you might experience some warping, so you really need to sand all four valve covers flat after you get them back. I used PRO-TEC powdercoaters on 12th and Simms, call Mark Trawinski at 720-274-0147. They're kind of buddies of mine, so I really don't have an accurate price point for what this cost. But they have a zillion colors and a fast turnaround, so they're worth a call. SURELY it will be less time and money than Powdercoat Specialties $$$$$$$, IMO. I primed my shroud with Dupli-Color header primer, and topcoated it with Gloss BBQ black from ACE. I don't really have high hopes for it at this point, a lot of Pelicans recommend KRYLON, but only time will tell how mine will hold up. The only thing to keep in mind with ALL the wires, is not to try to bend them out of the ordinary, and the way they have hardened over 10, 20, maybe 30 years. I just refreshed some of the end connectors and re-heat shrinked some of the splices. There also is some fancy DUCK-brand wrap-tape that's really stretch and rubbery that I used to wrap some of the really bendy-spots. Time will tell for that stuff, too. Have fun!

OH also I had the HE's ceramic-coated, inside and out. I used a company called "Applied Plastic Coatings, Inc.", in Wheatridge. It was about $240 I think. They have a few color options, but not as many as powdercoat. I chose "Satin Silver".

I cleaned up my engine last summer - took it down to long block, clear coated metal, replaced all hoses, elec, ht exchangers etc and just installed it last weekend decided not to paint sheet metal etc black as it make the engine bay too dark - maybe it's my eyes..... Want to clean up the underside of the wheel wells etc, but am anxious for some road time still have a couple of things to do before filling it up with oil and firing it up - maybe this week end ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Carl - the Porsche has a different perspective from inside the engine compartment doesn't it. Right now Im cleaning up that area on my car. I decided to put a tarp down in my garage and Im using an engine degreaser and hosing it down.

Yeah, that's the way I got it; I agree it's an interesting choice at best. It's one of those stories where I didn't know what I was looking at when I bought the car and my eyes were all glazed over anyway. But, that was a long long time ago, and thank goodness for this place.
