Can I replace the barrel nut on the transmission/starter with a normal one?

I have not been able to source a new barrel nut that fastens the starter to the transmission and mine is galled badly. Is there any reason I cannot replace it with a standard nut? What is the reason for this one being a barrel nut anyway?

Sorry for all the bone head questions lately, I promise they will stop once I get my engine back in.

I believe this one nut is a barrel nut because the clearance between the starter housing and the stud for the nut is rather tight. Therefore if you put a regular 6 side hex nut on there, you probably can't get a wrench on it to turn it?

I'm pretty sure this barrel nut is the same M10 barrel nut that is used for the cylinder heads, so the nut should be easy to get from Pelican. I have a spare head nut I could offer you if you'd like.

same as a head nut. if you can find a 10mm nut with 15mm wrench size, they work fine. same as the other engine to trans nuts.

Is there a joke behind this? If so I don't get it.

I didn't realize that it was the same as a head nut. That would explain why I couldn't find the right one.

If I put a 15mm nut on there will I be able to get it off with the engine/tranny in the car? I don't expect to have to worry about it since the starter is new, but you never know.

a standard nut will work and you can get a wrench on it.

a starter wrench kinda a u shape works the best.

the nut i suggested will take a socket with an extension, straight on, or a 15mm wrench. swipe one off an engine to trans stud and use a 17mm wrench size nut in it's place.

grady doesnt joke about porsches. i bet he has a garage of parts. pales in comparison to his experience.
i like the barrel nut. makes it easier (in my mind) to get the starter off, with the motor in the car.

I will just replace with the barrel nut. The engine is out of the car now, so it's hard to tell why the barrel nut is necessary. With the engine out, it is easy to get to the nuts. I had the starter rebuilt as a precaution since the engine is out. I figured for $80 it is good preventative maintenance considering how hard it is to replace the starter with the engine in. Hopefully I won't have to ever worry about it again (knock on wood).

wow. rebuild for $80? awesome deal. if pelican doesnt have the nuts. they didnt when i bought mine, i got them from partsheaven.

No joke. My lame attempts at humor usually fall flat.

My point is buying a single nut will cost $5 plus another $20 ‘shipping & handling’. Wayne will still loose money. So… I’m saving Pelican Parts money by giving this away. Wayne can use the few $ toward a lift so that Boxter (or 959) doesn’t crush him.

Now if you order a big box of Pelican goodies, I suspect Pelican can include the nut at a normal cost.

I found the correct nut. It is close to new 'gunmetal black'. The internal hex is perfect and the threads spin on like new. It has to have been taken out of service more than 23 years ago.

Note my comment that you cannot use a 15 mm wrenching nut with the 1.5 hp starter motor. It is difficult with the 0.8 hp starter.

Be sure the stud does not protrude into the hex area of the nut as that reduces the purchase of the Allen wrench into the hex of the nut. That involves the correct stud, having it screwed into the case the correct distance and the correct washers under the nut.

The best tool to use with the nut is the 10 mm very long Alan socket wrench used for the head nuts. This gives the best clearance to the starter. If doing this in the car, be sure to disconnect the battery.

I have the nut setting on the computer. All I need is an address and I can drop it by the post office this AM. Of course Kevin is closer.

Thanks guys! The people on this board amaze me. I ask a bone head question and here I have two people offering to give me the part I need for free. I JUST received my $1,300 pelican parts order in the mail on Thursday and I forgot to include this nut. It never fails, I spend weeks perfecting my project list and I will always leave something small out.

I'll take one of you up on your offer. I'll PM my address and I'd like to at least paypal you the shipping costs.

The starter had nothing wrong with it so that might be one reason for the cheap rebuild cost. I did as preventative since the engine is out. They did a great job from what I can tell. New solenoid and brushes, plus the cleaned it up really well. It was COVERED in grease when I took it out due to my many oil leaks.
