Matt - very nice installation. I really like the stock location. There have been a lot of threads on where to install the MSD unit, and I think the stock location gives it a more professional look. After all, that's where I installed mine. I was also able to install mine without cutting or altering the stock wiring in any way. This allows me to go back to the original any time I want.

Tom F2 - look again at the picture of the install, the tach adapter is clearly marked in the lower left of the picture.

I do not understand your answer about the tach adapter. Did you need it and, if so, where did you mount it?

FWIW, I think that the answer on the need for a tach adapter can be found here: MSD Users - What brand of tachometer do you have?.

Tom
Tom,
My tach needed the adapter. If you look at my before and after pics at the beginning of this thread you can see that I mounted the tach adapter in the fuse/relay panel in the engine compartment.

As far as need is concerned, I spoke to a technician at MSD (before the install) who informed me that some Porsche tachs require the adapter and some don't. I tried mine without the adapter and the tach wouldn't work. I installed the adapter and the tach came to life.

Walter,
Thank you for the feedback!

Matt

Sounds like you need a new mechanic. Seriously if you dont want MSD, you can get your Bosch unit rebuilt for less than the price of a permatune... Permatune has a reputation of being the least reliable. Took me 2 hours to install my MSD. Not sure who wouldnt have the ability to do it...

From our host:

Bosch CD Unit, Rebuilt, 911 (1969-77) ** $250 core charge applies -- must provide rebuildable Bosch core in advance ** [More Info]
$350.00

10-8540-600-M46 Perma-Tune CD System, 3-pin, 911 (1969-77) [More Info]
$493.50

MS-6200 MSD-6200 CD System, 911 All [More Info]
$199.95

Not sure why anyone would go Permatune...

About $400 or so. I do miss the whistle a bit, though...

cfries, Nice work! Thanks for posting the pic of your finished installation. After the install, did you notice any difference between the Permatune and the MSD?

www.waytekwire.com make some double wall shrink wrap that's tough and almost looks stock. I used a piece today to shield the 930 rear brake caliper fluid line that's very visible.

Thanks guys!. I did notice a difference. It idles much better now and more responsive. Exactly what MSD claims. Haven't had a chance to drive it much, so I can comment on fuel mileage just yet.
