Can I replace the inner CV boot without removing the shaft?
I removed the driver side rear wheel today to run some wires to the engine compartment and noticed I had a split boot on the inner joint. It must have just happened because there is not any grease on the exterior. Can I replace the boot with the shaft still in the car? 86 Carrera.

it's easy enough IF you can tap off the inner joint. some pretty much pull off. others, not so easy.

John, thanks for the quick reply. Any suggestions on tapping it off. Also, I planned on taking the car on a three hour trip this week; any suggestions for a quick patch untill I can get back to repair it properly? Will Gorilla tape work? How about a good wrapping of Saran wrap or something else for a temp repair?

I doubt a three hour trip is going to kill ya, some go for days, weeks, months with an unnoticed torn boot. You'll get all kinds of opinions on this though...

In a pinch, I've used zip ties and Saran wrap. If nothing else, it reduces the ever-expanding splatter.

Thanks guys. I hated asking such a stupid question about the temp fix but I don't want to do any damage on the trip.
Jack, I think I am going to Saran wrap it just to keep it clean. Ben

What I did was taking the shaft off the tranny, the other end is still in place, with the wheel. Slide both boots off and replace them that way.

I did this last year on my inner boot with a kit from Pelican. I purchased new bolts as well. Its not difficult just messy. Do a search here or google for CV boot replacements I recall seeing a boot like thje old VW boots that were split on the side that allowed you to remove and replace without taking off the axle. Maybe that could also be a quick fix.

It is much easier with the axle off the car. I just replaced all 4 of my CV joints and boots. All 4 joints required a hydraulic press to remove and install. Besides, it is a very messy job and it is easier to repack and keep them clean on a workbench. The replacement boots from PP are different from the original and require longer bolts.
