Post '86 - '89 Carrera sway bar size?...........Help!

What is the size(mm)of the front and rear sway bar of an '86 - '89 Carrera. Steve Alarcon (Johnson's Alignment) suggested that I update my sway bars to one of an '86 - '89 Carrera.

Thanks in advance.

86 3.2 had antisway bars 22 mm front, 21 mm rear, and torsion bars 19mm front, 25mm rear.

More information here.

I think my '85 has a 20mm sway bar in the rear and the 87-89s have 21 or 22mm sway bars in the rear. I wanted to get the OEM from the 87-89s once too, and was told these bars will not fit a pre- 87 car.

The 87 - 89 carreras use a different size and different twist/mount, if you will, in the sway bar altogether because of the G50 transmission and its corresponding trailer arms.

I understand, the best way to go, is to use after-market (e.g. Weltmeister) adjustable sway-bars. Get 22mm front and rear. Then with the adjustables you can dial in the settings for your car and driving style.

Good luck.

Hmmmmmm.........what to do? I ran into a post for a front sway bar from an '86 for sale. He has it listed as 20mm. It's the bar only without any hardware. As you mentioned, it sounds like this may not be a direct swap. Could this be done or is there major fabrication needed? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I think the fronts maybe a direct swap. I would make sure about the mounting points though. I think some had the "through the body" while most front sway-bars connected to the a-arms via rubber holes and connected to the brakcets underneath the rack and pinion mounts. Not sure how to describe this.

The rears sway bars from an '86 should work as well. Again, double check the mounting points on your car, get familiar with them, the go parts hunting.

Good luck.
