Smog Check Help

Looking for some advice on Smog Checking an 86 Carrera

Bit of background, Car is primarily a track car. Normally run Headers, Steve Wong Chip and various megaphones, SuperTrapps etc.

Last weekend decide that on the rare occasion that I drive on the street that it would be nice to have a current sticker on my plates.

Remove Headers and related track parts and re-install Heat-Exchangers, Cat, Factory Intake and all related parts to make it smog legal (at least until after the smog test).

Co2/O2/HC/CO all read legal limits, But due to off the charts NO readings, I am now a GROSS POLLUTER. NO readings are 2410 @ 1500 RPM and 2050 @ 2500 RPM

Any idea on what would cause the NO levels to go off the charts while all other levels seem normal?

Appreciate any insight and suggestions short of moving to another state..

I would verify the condition of you cat - its sole purpose is NOx reduction.

Also, is your SW chip custom tuned? High NOx is normally from running leaner, but I would think the opposite given your mods. Steve could help you out.

Can you post numbers for the rest of your readings? It may provide some insight.

Try another cat and be sure the engine is toasty warm when the test is done.
Good luck.

Also, maybe a bit late, but some smog places will do a pre-check for you.

Good luck.

Replace to Stock (I call it the Smog Chip) Chip for Insurance and Re-connect the Brown Cali/Jap Emissions wire under the seat.

You will absolutely hate the way she drives but that is what is needed to get those tags.

Before you pay for another test, see if they will check first.

Little things that also help in the end:
1. Since you are on a rolling dyno, make sure rear tires are inflated as high as possible, less friction; less work car has to do.
2. What gears are they testing in, if second and third, have them test in first and second. This alone passed another car I had when it failed in second and third.
3. Cat has to be super hot.
4. If all else fails buy this product as it works, and I’m not affiliated with this company.

Failed CA NOX Today, W/Steve Wong Chip

Otherwise all stock - my tires were well inflated too, but wasn't really warm
compared to years past.

Am I looking at a new CAT?

992 (804 max) @ 15mph
780 (685 max) @ 25mph

oh, HC is high too

172 (138 max) @ 15mph

Gotta clean this puppy up - electric conversion time?
