Question 3.2 conversion question

I have put a 3.2 into a 75 911S Targa.....all my attention has been under the rear lid & that end is all sorted...NOW, fuel pump time !!!! The '75's pump was way in the back, near the right rear swaybar mount...the Carrera pump goes up front by the fuel tank/steering rack.
The '75 has the steel front end, not the aluminum one that Carrera's have....has anyone got pics of how they mounted the Carrera fuel pump up front on a steel early (74-75) type frontend cross bar ????

Hi Darkbeer,

I have a 1975 911 Targa that I also did the 3.2 conversion to.

Don't bother mounting the fuel pump up front, it works fine in the rear location. Just buy a 3.2fuel pump, switch out the banjo fitting that was on your 2.7 pump and run the fuel lines up to the fuel filter.

+1. I did the same thing on the 3.2 in my '76. I mounted the Carrera fuel pump in the rear using the same mount as my CIS pump. It has worked just fine.

I took 2 pieces of sheet metal and rounded them to fit the axle and fuel pump, then I welded them together with a spacer to leave room for the hose clamp.

WOW !!!! 3 responses.....
Crashr & IROC....it's to late for your version of a solution, I have busted my brain & butt crawling around under the ass end installing all the Carrera fuel lines & making adapters from the'75 fuel lines to the '87 ones etc etc.... plus, I routed the DME harness right through the old CIS fuel pumps mount cage, by the rear swaybar mount....
I really appreciate your PIC E Sully, of your front end solution...I am considering a similar solution with a bracket on the steel tube & reusing the pump cradle mount/clamp that was used to hold the'75's pump out back....
Now I have to get the wiring sorted for the pump. I think the hot wire comes from the DME harness that extends up to the dash/tach...but I'm not 100% sure on that...have to check into it.

Got gas ?????

GOD !!!!! draining that last gallon out of the tank ...sucks! anyway, got it dry & went ahead with my fabricated mount using an old 912 coil mount that I reshaped smaller, to fit the crosstube, have it holding a piece of 1/8 " aluminum with the 2 rubber mounts holding the '75 pumps craddle...worked out great. paid a visit to Parts Heaven & got the Carrera banjo line from pump to tunnel line & pulled a complete pump wire harness out of an '88 ....(also got the O2 sensor & harness..another story)...got everything hooked & clamped up...drove the 912 down to 76 (cute...my '76 912, to be exact) for 2 gas cans (4 gal) of nice fresh supreme for the empty tank....touched the + & - to the battery & listened to the pump run gas all the way through the lines-filter-injector rails-return line to the tank....let it just purr away for a few minutes & (moment of truth..) stuck my head (nose) under the car front & rear....NO LEAKS :-) :-}

Now, all that remains is that last group of wires from the DME harness behind the dash to the tach etc....

This 3.2 is soooo close to start up... I'm planning to use Kendall 20w-50 with 2 bottles of Comp Cams break in additive (read ZDDP) for that 1st 500 miles, then Swepco after that.

I would recommend Brad Penn 30W break-in oil, or Castrol GTX 20W50. I think you do not want as much ZDDP during break-in, otherwise the wear patterns will take a long time to properly establish. Castrol is cheap oil so you can change it soon to get all the metal out. After the break-in you can use your Kendal GT-1, Brad Penn, or Swepco.

IT RUNS !!!!!!!!!!
But sorta crappy 'cause I think the injectors could use a cleaning or replacement....It did fire right the hell up though :-)
when I tore it down, #2 cyl had very little carbon build up...VERY different looking from all the other 5 cyl's....my guess is that #2 spewed out way to much gas, so if I'm going to replace one, I should do 'um all RIGHT???? I have found two places on the internet that offer rebuilt OEM (Bosch) injectors for the 3.2 for $38 ish & $54 ish each. Has anyone tried these on their motors???
The other option is to have mine "rebuilt" by an injector shop....
The only other issue I'm having is that the orig '75 915 to CIS "coathanger" throttle rod (from the bellcrank on the side of the trans, to the throttle body linkage) seems to be 1" to short for the DME link hook-up...& that's after adjusting it as long as it will go (22 3/4") I need one appx 24" long. are the 84-86 915 trans "coathnger" rods longer then the 74-83 CIS ones ????

You didn't waste your time putting the fuel pump up front where Porsche intended it (except for a brief period when they somehow forgot).

Dennis and Mike may have gotten away with this, but I can tell you that at altitude (like Denver or higher) you can pretty much expect vapor lock when DEing or racing a '74 or '75 or whenever before the pump got moved back front. At least in the full summer heat.

Runs fine until you try to restart hot. Not all the time, but ask Andy York how it feels when the race is black flagged mid session, you cook in the hot pits (adding more meaning to that term), and then try to restart when the mess on track is cleaned up.

Folks with those cars carry squirt bottles to spray water on the pump back there with all that heat (including that from the hot air ducting), or install a funnel so they can pour ice water down by the shock mount onto the pump to get started again. The squirt bottle trick was in Pano, and made it into an Upfixin.

Maybe the 3.2 pump is less susceptible to vapor lock, but you still did a good thing.

One more thing. If you don't have a "Porsche" fuel pump, a VW (Bosch) Jetta pump of the same vintage works fine. i now have a 911.xxx.xxx pump in mine, but when I first did the conversion, I used a $10 junkyard VW pump. It lasted 60k or so, so I think I got my money's worth.

thanks everyone !!!

I have to agree, I am quite happy with the fuel pump as far away from any heat source as I can get it...It's so right sitting up front by the tank PUSHING the gas to the motor.

GOT INJECTORS !!!!

Yes I did, 6 of them from injectorwhse.com they're in So Carolina & got them shipped to me the very next day !!!! in Nor California !!! great service 2 year 24K warranty
Part # FI852-12113. I tried to get them here from Wayne, but they had none !!!!

MOTOR RUNS GREAT !!! except I have to reset the idle...other then that , purrs like a petted kitten. I am just out the door to Parts Heaven to find out once & for all if there IS a difference between the 915 to CIS "coathanger" throttle rod & the one used on the 84-86 915 to DME rod....I'll let you know. Going to pick up some other bits AND!!! a new DME relay for the sake of "Murphy".....oh, & some 16x6 & 7 rims.....

NEXT issue...fitting decent tires + 16x7's under that skinny 1975 rear 1/4 panels !!!!!
