alternator fit problem

Guys,
I have a 82SC. My Alt died. It is a 50A stock Valeo unit. These are no longer available rebuilt. My only choice is the 75A unit. The 75A At is about 1/4 inch longer. The problem is this puts the fan pully out of line with the engine pully. In addition, the Alt bolts used to mount the Alt in the fan housing are too short to mount the air baffle that mounts on the back of the Alt. I assume I could solve this but I not sure how to solve the pully alignment without maching the fan housing. Any suggestions? I am going to try and have my 50A Alt rebuilt at a local shop but I don't have high hopes this is possible. Have any of you run into this situation?

Thanks,
Tim

Tim,

If not locally, there are a few of these Valeo units on eBay.

Did you have your alternator bench tested?

Note: When I replaced the voltage regulator on our '86,
I had to trim the plastic air baffle to accomodate the larger
Porsche voltage regulator.

Good luck,

Gerry

You have the wrong alternator... its that simple. Proper fitment means the air guide can be installed on the back end and the fan pulley falls in-line vertically with the pulley on the crank. Do yourself a favor and buy a new Valeo with the built in voltage regulator and follow the Porsche-specified mod that Wayne has so nicely posted in the catalog for us... about ~$330 VERY well spent!

Also, I haven't yet found someone willing to bench test these types of alterantors... the documentation most of the FLAPS have says you can only test the alt. in the car. I suspect this is akin to the issue of NOT disconnecting your battery while the car is running.... sizzle sizzle.
