How to restore 73 side mirror?

I have a 1973 E with an old stock side mirror (911 731 013 01 ).

I have found one NOS, but it's 280 Euro...about $400 US.
Ouch!

Is there any way to restore these?
Mine has a slight dent (from a rock?), and needs new chrome to look good again.
There is no rust on it.

Does a company exist in the US that can refurbish mine for a reasonable cost?
Seems like the existing mirror will be broken in this process, so do replacement mirror lens exist as well?

Thanks for any leads or info.

Sounds like my 72 mirror exactly.

I understand that the 74 is available, and in both left AND right. It's a little larger, however, but the same shape and material.

Doug, restoring yours sounds cost prohibitive to me. I just sold a nice "driver" for $150, that is the mirror was good, black trim was decent, SS back was nice, base needed to be rechromed, but was presentable. Chroming will set you back a minimum of $150 I believe, so that NOS one sounds like a decent deal given your dent.

Also consider that Pelican sells very nice reproductions for $75 until the right OEM one comes along.

There was an article in PANO some years back on how to retore one...but forget which issue...all my old PANO's went with the car. Sorry...maybe somebody here recalls the article, could send you a copy?

I can restore it for you but figure between $200 and $250 and there are some limitations on how nice they will actually turn out. One of my customers bought two mirrors one of which I believe is now on a Parade winning car. Shaun got the mirror today, thanks! I will be restoring that one soon.

By the way $400.00 for a NOS 72-73 mirror sounds like a deal, you should grab it if it is the real deal.

Also,

You may want to contact Jay Zollinger (here in Portland), he may still have an article (http://www.early911sregistry.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6875&highlight=mirror+resto%2A) that Paul sent him. Check your e-mail.

Didn't think so.
Too cheap.

Now the NOS part in Europe has the exact same part no.
Will I get the correct smaller mirror with the rounded corners???

I would think for $400 US, I would be getting the correct NOS mirror.

Anyone tried this repro from Germany ?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Porsche-911-T-E-S-RS-RSR-mirror-door-mirror-new-rhd-lhd_W0QQitemZ160349637806QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car sParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item2555954cae&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262

Seems like a good price if it is as good as they claim

Steve

Hard to say exactly if these repros are like the original with just one photo. They do look pretty good but need to see the other side to know if it would be right on the car.

BTW you car looks great and a correct mirror will make it look just that better.

I see you are in Basel. My RS was originally delivered in Ettingen and was serviced at this shop.
